The elephant was called Bill Laden as he had devastated a lot of homes with amazing stealth. And if anyone traverses a tea estate at night in areas like Sonitpur...its actually darned scary. The nights are pitch black and foggy during the December month. Then when a bull elephant plays hit and run you'll hurl a lot of adjectives about its ancestery. I think Bill Laden was pretty mild.

Even more funny is that the elephant was named bin laden, what should the PH be called? the hack of a writer didnt understand the implications of the flip side...could we call him anti animal for desecrating the memory of a magnificent animal and sic PETA on him ?

You can see the picture of the professional hunter here
This report suggests that the wrong elephant might have been killed
The hunter explains why he shot 10 times here
Mr Phukan, a licensed hunter, said: "It was charging towards me and I kept firing. Another few yards and it would have run over me."

Right....well it`s all clear now then.....NOT !
So the ( possibly/probably ) wrong animal was `charging` towards the PH and he had time to work the bolt ten times......... Some `charge` - some PH ! The man is a rank amatuer and talks a pile of BS !

This man is definately new. The real guy has been on discovery and all and I have met him a few times. He normally puts rogues down with one shot. His name is Mr. Dinesh Chaudhury, he also has a bait and tackle type of shop in Guwahati and he is an avid fisherman.

Re: professional? hunter?
There is another story unfolding in Purulia district of West Bengal ! Two shikaris are waiting for an elephant ( I won't us the word rouge) to make its apperance. Strange how modern day shikaris " wait " at the comfort of guest houses ?? The elephant however is not showing up and two other elephants have been requisitioned to lure him out .
If he is not showing up , can't they just let him go ?

Mr Phukan, a licensed hunter, said: "It was charging towards me and I kept firing. Another few yards and it would have run over me." THE NEXT ROGUE YOU GO AFTER MAY DO JUST THAT MR.PH!!
Any one knows how a person is granted 'licenced hunter 'status?
Grumpy, Purple haze just turned "magic fingers" - that looks like a double in the pic-so he stuffed 4 reloads (atleast!)-the reuters pic showed what looked like wounds on trunk and flanks...Thanks Sujay for the pics
TC-416 Rigby indeed never had it so glum-about 4000fpe with the 400 grainers at 100yds? x 10-any body have a calculator handy?
does'nt the army have an 84mm carl Gustav RCL? Mr.PH-definitely a bed pan emptier in another avatar-doesent deserve to hold a bloody catapult, leave alone a heavy rifle. The animal most probably was chased and had several bullets put into him in all parts, over the whole evening.
Should we nominate Mr.PH for "person-most deserving-a-night-scope-to go -to-the-loo"??
Dev-
Its not the adjective used on the elephant that is offensive, but the term Professional hunter used here that is...
Somebody rat on this sicko to the Maneka maniac!

Re: professional? hunter?
The .416 Rigby with 400 gr bullets makes around 4,990 ft lbs ME, 4,315 ft lbs @ 100 yards.
I`ve never heard of a .416 Rigby double. No doubt somebody, somewhere makes a .416 Rigby double but you can bet that the rifle concerned isn`t a .416 Rigby double.

I`ve just noticed a glorious typo in Sujays post above:
"Two shikaris are waiting for an elephant ( I won't us the word ROUGE )"
Ah hah ! So pink Elephants really do exist !!!

Grumpy you are right. As I said this source in the state wildlife department knows nothing more than a .303 !!!
Here the wildlife department downs rogues or other big games with .375 magum. For cats they use 375 or the the IOF 315. They keep some 22 rifles handy as well.
So long

Rouge as in "moulen"?
Dev- madame M is about as close as I can get to using profanities!
Good show on the bream...detox-ed my self in the sihiserh and a couple of other trips-loads of fresh air and good company in the form of Mack The Knife.
Yeah TC-from what I can make out in the pics that Sujay posted, looks like a double.More of a shame if it was a 470 or some such caliber.
Thanks for the math Grumpy-I was guesstimating.
Best

Re: professional? hunter?
Eljefe, It is definitely a double. You are right. Could be a 470. Or may be a 450-400. Its a popular rifle among "hunters". The cartridges for the latter are available in reasonable quantities in this part of the country.
Cheers
