Is this .423 the 10.75x68? Anyone know what's the usual price of this ammo and how hard it is to procure?
Cheers!

Re: 423 mauser rife
This would be the 10.75x68mm; though there was an earlier 10.75x63, superceded by the longer-cased one. In either case, it's an obsolete cartridge, out of production for many years. As with many others of the old cartridges there has been some renewed interest, but I doubt that any major manufacturer will ever produce it again. Bertram lists the case. Can't think of any other case it could readily be made from, even if reloading supplies were available to you. Wouldn't mind having one myself, would make a dandy bear and moose rifle. Cheers.

Abhijeet,
The ammo for this caliber is as scarce as hen's teeth, I've been runnning from pillar to post to get ammo for my rifle and was lucky enough to have an old friend of mine give a couple of boxes which are in spanking new condition and were superbly looked after, I also bought some 35 rounds of ammo from one of Cyrixoutside's contacts but they turned out to be 10.75x63, not a problem since the projectiles are the same weight and diameter and can be worked upon.
As far as the shootability is concerned, the recoil is similar to the .375 H&H and the ME figures are too, trajectory is another thing altogether, but for all practical purposes its great fun to shoot, I use my grandad's A-grade, Oberndorf Mauser and I love that rifle.

Don't forget that it may, in fact, be a .404 Jeffery just marked in European markings. (10.75 x 74 = .404 Jeffery). If nothing else & it is built on a Mauser 98 action, it can always be re-chambered & the action feed rails & bolt face opened up for the 404, a truly world-class cartridge.

Converting a 10.75x68 to a 10.75x73 (.404) is not going to make it a more viable option, the .423 is as white an elephant here as is the .404. You will have to slug the bore first to ensure your bore diameter, there are many .422 and .418 cal variants in both the .423 and the .404, also you will be running higher chamber pressures as the .423 fires a 347-grain pill @ approximately 2200fps, while the .404 lobs a 400-grainer at almost the same velocity, I'm not saying that it cannot be done, it can, but i wouldn't trust anyone to do a cartridge conversion over here.

Jim,
Then its better to look for .423 cartridges instead of looking for converting it in India. Please help me out in getting the .423 cartridges if u get across them somewhere.

If you are hell bent on doing a conversion, get in touch with Pacific Tool and Gauge http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/products.htm I am sure they will have reamers et al, to do the conversion.
As to why you would want a .423 or .404 Jeffery personally is not something I understand, but more power to you.

It is indeed a white elephant, ammo difficult to get, last i tried i was getting some for the price of 500 a piece, that too not readily available but can be arranged scenario, it was by shamsuddin in delhi. You can get there no from the yellow pages section.
Its cartridge is available on http://www.cabelas.com/p-0024283216986a.shtml, but not in india.

Re: 423 mauser rife
Hello everybody. My dad had a 423 Mauser made by FN of Belgium. He sold it in 1968 or so. He shot 2 leopards with in in 1958. I would like to buy one for old times' sake. Ideally it would be dad's old rifle which would have his name written neatly inside a solid canvas covered wooden case. Any 423 Mauser would be fine. Does anyone know of such a rifle for sale? Or a 404 Jeffery?
