Yet another Saturday...

Post by Mack The Knife » Sun Apr 27, 2008 1:40 am

...and yet another trip report from the WASIbum.

I wanted to leave at 4 a.m. so as to catch the early morning action but I finally dropped off to sleep around 3'ish. Anyway, I was out of the house by 5:55 a.m. and spinning away from the coracle by 9 a.m..

Here's fishy number one...
Image

The next one was a first of sorts because it happened to be a tilapia on a Mepps Agila No.4

Followed by a few more murrel...

Did a couple of hours of ledgering for rohu but just did not get a bite even though I saw them all over Forbes.

The last session was for mahseer. They were in a real feeding frenzy today and even though I cocked up innumerable times, I still managed to catch four of them.

Left the place at 9:45 p.m. and had a thoroughly enjoyable drive back with Led Zep belting away on the stereo - I needed something stronger than just a coffee to stay awake on the road. ;)

The first mahseer looks pretty big. How much did it weigh?

Aha looks like a full action packed day.... :)

Rusty, Did you notice any difference in the conditions from last week and yesterday? Like tempreture, Water level or something? What do you think was the reason that mahseer were in a feeding frenzy as you say?

Yep, As Pran said, that one looks quite big. Biggest so far I think from Forbes.

What size hooks were you using for Mahseer? Or this one was on a Plug?

Looks like you had a good trip! That has to be the biggest tilapia i've ever seen caught on spinner. Congratulations.

Yaj: I don't listen to rock quite often but when I do, it has got to be the old stuff. Time to dust off those old LPs, assuming you haven't already.

Jonah: Made a mistake and sold the Gypsy a couple of weeks back. Regret the decision so much that I am working on ordering a new one. ;)

Pran: No idea about the exact weight but I would say it's close to 3 kgs. Certainly not the biggest caught so far.

Inder: The conditions were a little different. There was slight cloud cover. It never got very windy. The moon was a little over half but it only rose around 10:30/45 p.m. (saw it whilst driving). Water level seemed to be about the same (5' to 6' below), which makes spinning for murrel more difficult but all the more rewarding.
I was using a Matzuo Sickle Octopus hook 4 or 6 (I forget) for both rohu and mahsser. These are the pointiest hooks I have seen to date but they loose their pointiness, though still useable, by the end of a days fishing - especially a swim with a lot of rocks and sunken trees. All the mahseer were caught by the ledgering method.

Sanjay: I'd be a happy chappy if I could make it a paying job. ;)

Ta! Was really surprised to see this happen. I really wish I could have added atleast one rohu to the catch. They were feeding close to the main channel and it would have been a hoot to fight them in the current.

I ordered the same hooks from Cabelas, Is there a way to re-sharpen them. Do you do that?

Inder, being small hooks and extremely pointy, the point tends to bend/fold just a tiny bit. Since the deformation is so small do not even think of using pliers to straighten out the deformation. Instead, use a file or knife sharpening stone to remove the bent bit and re-point the hook. You will need a fine file.

Last weekend I used the file on my Swiss Army knife to do this as I had left the hooks at the cottage and was fishing from the road across the cottage channel.

I saw you using the same make but the size was bigger than what I used during these past two weekends. It's okay to use that size for mahseer but for rohu I prefer to use something smaller - Nos. 4 (max), 6 or 8.

BTW, all four mahseer were probably caught on a hook with a slightly deformed point. I realised this only after I had finished fishing or else I would have filed or replaced the hook. In otherwords, they were still pointy enough to hook fish in a pinch.

GG,

Was the first mahseer in the post a blue finned mahseer or some other variety?
