To the best of my knowledge, PB. The Arms Rules-1962 specify a semi-automatic smooth bored gun with a barrel length less than 29" as a prohibited arm. You will have difficulty in convincing the licensing authorities otherwise even if your gun has a 30" barrel.

Possible that some are registered as single barrel repeaters. But, that does not make them NPB.

Ashok, in the case of a semi-auto, the barrel length should not be less than 29". That is what the Arms Rules-1962 say.

Go to page-32
(a) Prohibited arms as defined in Section 2 (1) (i) and such other arms as the Central Government, may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify to be prohibited arms.

(b) Semi-automatic fire-arms, other than those included in categories 1 (c) and III (a), smooth bore guns having barrel of less than 29" in length

Ashok,

Thank you for that. I checked other government sources of the same document. The one I posted the link to had barrel length as 29". And after reading the act from a couple of those sources, this what is it means (I think )

1. Semi-auto firearms other than pistols are prohibited.

2. Shotguns with barrel length less than 20" are prohibited.

I think the 29 inch mentioned is a typo. The correct minimum length is less than 20 inches. The two 1. Semi Auto and 2. the minimum length of less than 20 inches for a shotgun barrel are separate entities. Both are regulated by MHAI. Semi Auto can be a rifle, when the 20 inch minimum does not apply but still needs a PB Licence. A shotgun in either of the 1 and 2 categories needs a PB Licence.

Sudhaiob,

You are right. My first post was incorrect and I apologise for that.
