No drill scope mount for rifle?

Post by Kumarnishith » Tue May 28, 2013 8:48 pm

Do any of you know of any good no drill scope mounts? I have got a BSA Supersport 5 .22lr Rifle without any rail/provison for mounting a scope. I don't want to ruin it by drilling. Was surfing the web for the same, found couple of websites...

http://www.jmeckscopemounts.com/Home_Page.php

http://www.scopemounts.com/index.html?main.html#

Will either of them work? Any other idea?

Thanks in advance..

Hi there,
> The web-sites that say 'No Drilling' assumes that the rifle is already provided with a groove for mounting a scope or has a rail welded on to it to accept a scope.
> Imagine how will a mount get attached to the rifle - if there are no grooves or a rail to clamp it on.
> In the event your BSA Sportsman 5 has neither of the above & you want to fix a scope on to it - It's better to avail the services of a Good Gunsmith to do it.
> My earlier Winchester 30-06 (which was a model 1917 sports converted) had no provision to fix a scope. However I managed to get a "Griffin & Howe" mount from the US & got my Gunsmith to work on it - It turned out to be a splendid job.
Good Luck!

The mounting systems being refered to are for rifles / shotguns that do not have any sort of rails.

The various mounts available usually mount on the rear sight base and more often than not use a pistol scope for the extended eye relief. Think 'scout rifle'. For shotguns, the scope base isn't as far forward.

I had cobbled up something similar, keeping in mind standard riflescope eye-relief as pistol scopes have a very limited FOV, for my Mauser but refused to use or sell it with the rifle as it destroyed the lines and handling of what I consider to be a classsic rifle. I want my baby back!

Will post some pics later.

Photobucket is acting up, so I will post the pics in seperate posts.

Establishing some important measurements.

Drawing of the base and rail.

The base and rail. In steel as the earlier two attempts in aluminium alloy resulted in a warped rail.

The new base slid into the original base for the express sights.

With the rail fastened onto the new base. The length of the hex bolts was such that when fastened down they pushed the new base up, ever so slightly, against the angled sides of the old base, thereby locking the new base in position.

Thanks Mack - You couldn't have explained it better - The pics say it all :D
BTW - You mentioned about "Wanting the Baby back" - I presume you meant the Mauser - Wonder what made you part with such a beauty

Severe lateral vibration was noticed on test firing the rifle, so it was a good thing I had gone with steel and not aluminium alloy. Nishith take note.

To stop the lateral vibration I cobbled up a a 'stopper' that would be fastened to the back of the rail and slid into the stripper guide slot.

Some views with the 'stopper' in place.

It is extremely likely that you will need to raise the comb height. Here's a simple solution.

Thanks Mack...Your penchant for perfection is highly commendable...This post should be made a sticky as it will help everyone who want to put a scope on their old rifle without ruining its antique value!

Make that, "penchant for tinkering" and I'll agree with you.

Glad it helped. If you can post some pics of your rifle, with and without the stock, perhaps I could offer some suggestions. Assuming there isn't already an available solution.
