Basics of Fishing rods

Hi Ranjeet,

Here's the list to get you started. There's far too many manufacturers and models, so I am going to stick with what I use or know off. We will also forget about big mahseer, rohu, etc. for the moment and start with just a general spinning set up. This will get you murral, rohu, small mahseer, tilapias, etc. Once you have tried your hand at fishing in April, you can then decide whether you want to invest more in the sport or just sell your tackle and get out of it.

This may be okay for the WASI stretch but not necessarily other waters and fish.

Also bear in mind that this info comes from someone who is still a neophyte.

Never seen a Matzuo hook but if you recall, Mystic Murral from Texas used to sing it's praises on IA. Since Navdeep gave me a budget to work to, I chose these as they were cheaper than the Mustad Ultra Points.

Whats wrong with a basic spinning outfit? I think your list is great for a newbie.
Basic rod & reel of 12-17lbs, add lighter or heavier line, and change hooks and one should get away with most common fishing, what say? Most of us newbies would want a few dozen mentored trips to learn the ropes added to practice on the aquarium using chilwa hooks before progressing...
Was wondering about Matzuo and mustad , remind me to give you some ghaziabad hooks when we meet next-the locals load thses with worm and use them on hand lines-deadly strike rate!

Nothing so long as it isn't used for the big stuff. Otherwise the clueless wonder will have his rod broken and then hold me responsible.

Most of us newbies would want a few dozen mentored trips to learn the ropes.

Absolutely no question about that and I have been very fortunate in that regard. However, one wouldn't be too bright if one required a few dozen trips to learn the ropes.

Coming to Patiala would add an hour to our travel time to Pong but I think it would be worth it.So it can be,

1.Friday evening Delhi-Ambala-Rajpura-Patiala (4.5 -5hrs)

2.Saturday early morning Patiala-Pong Dam(4-5 hrs)

3.Sunday Pong Dam

4.Monday Pong Dam-Delhi

Hi Mack The Knife, for lack of time, I couldn't do this earlier, however last weekend, I spent some time in a shop exclusive for angling called Fisherman's Friend.

I saw a lot of rods from German Companies and of course Shimano, but Shimano was not telescopic- at least not in stock

And had a little chat with the owner- he told the following about lenghts of rods

1) He suggested I buy something about 2.7 m long, rather than 2.1 m that you have suggested.
Do you think it makes sense? or are there too many bushes to use a 2.7 m long?

2) I saw a lot of brands for the spinning wheel- Abu Gracia being very common as well as Shimano..
Should i go for a german brand, can't recall the names they have lots of them

Let me know what you think about the rod length, I need to buy something soon.

Go with the dealers recommendation if you want to fish in Germany. However, if you can only have one rod spin with on the WASI stretch, then follow my suggestions. It's not that the 2.7 wont work on the WASI stretch. It's just that the 2.1m rod is a little more handy. It's horses for courses but the 2.1 makes the most sensible starting point where the WASI stretch is concerned.

Buy a Shimano reel. The German reels may have been from a company called DAM.

Buy a 2-piece 7' rod rather than a telescopic.

If you want just one rod and reel for general spinning on the WASI stretch pick up the Shimano Beastmaster SBMAX210M spinning rod and the Shimano Symetre SY4000RI or SY4000FI spinning reel. Don't buy el cheapo tackle especially if you are only going to have one rod and reel.
