No, still a long way to go!

Btw, checked Guns in your town today. Visco is the preferred choice of dealers.

Also saw a Khurmi manufactured Gun.

Shaktiman was another one available there.

How good are 22/24" barrel guns with conventional butts?

Hi Msandhu the Mehar Singh you are talking about, please check the year of make,if its early 90s to 2001,hold on to it,old man Mehar Singh God bless him wherever he is had made these guns in EN 9 Steel which he had imported from Czech,in the late 80s,these were mainly s X s,but i have seen a cpl of O/Us in this, the guns must be 25 years old but their ejectors are still so crisp and everthing works perfectly. He had a passion for making guns, sadly the same didnt continue.

NGrewal, so should look out for an over-under now!
Modern is retailing ~ 28K. The gun is pretty heavy though.

The main emphasis now is in selecting the correct barrel length.
Choice varies from 22" to 26", nothing more.

Jaz, I've also liked the over-under but as I said found the gun a little too heavy. Specially comparing to Visco!

Folks, first things first, help me selecting the best barrel size.
Choice is amongst 22, 24 & 26".

Keep in mind, the Gun should be carry friendly(Car) & have good range.

Why worry about range when the gun is going to be used for self defense? There is no difference in "range" between 20",22", 24", 26", or 28" shotgun barrels. The larger the shot, the longer the range. A longer barrel gives you better "follow through" and thus makes it easier to hit a small moving target at longer range; but you won't be shooting flying birds. A shorter barrel is a bit quicker for a snap shot at closer range. So decide what you need more, and go for it. Cheers.

Thanks, it shall be serving a dual purpose, self-defense + some bird shooting.

Choice is limited between 3 barrel sizes - 22", 24" & 26".

Btw, is it unanimous that a short butt be avoided?

I'm afraid you yourself will have to decide your barrel length....

Mount a gun, swing it. Then mount it and follow the edge of the ceiling. Mount it and aim at a point on the wall in front. Do this quickly, then slowly. See how you feel. Barrel length determines swing, and is in turn based on your height and arm length. To be honest, nobody here can suggest your ideal barrel till we see you mount and shoot.

That said, I shoot both 32" and 28", and manage well with both, though find the 28" faster to mount, while the longer 32" pulverises clays. Personally, unless you are sub 5 feet tall, or intend to shoot skeet, 28"-30" is a perfect compromise between ease and pointability. Why I have a 32" is a long story, complicated by the fact that it is my favourite gun.

The single most important thing is to be familiar with whatever you buy, such that mounting and shooting becomes reflexive.

Any bog standard shotgun can be carried broken down in a case. Luparas to carry in trouser legs are banned by law in most countries.

All shotguns have almost the same range. I would have suggested multi choke if you want versatility, but cannot think of any Indian version.

There is no single key to fit all.

Yeah pretty much, that means one can't point & shoot the hockey butt!

Im spending the buck, if I can manage to get the best of both the Worlds, why not!

@ Sanjay, had one earlier but sold when I was a teen-ager.
Why does it bother you, I guess this is your 1st reply to the thread, hope you could have added something useful.

Many thanks for that, your replies have been extremely helpful & knowledgeble.

Actually Guns are a one time buy, latter on changing or swapping is a tedious process. I thought its better to research well & get the right thing.

Will try the mount & point technique.

After I have the Gun, constant usage will make things familiar. Obviously its no rocket science!

Regarding the range, are you sure all barrel lenghts have the same range? If yes, then it shall help me in deciding.

That's right, there's no single key but one could find a key that fits most locks!

A question though, if a Hockey butt is pointed at shoulder level & fired, can the recoil hit the face of the shooter?
