I guess its more of a horses for courses issue, and the STF/Para guy might just be following protocol that has been outlined by his higher ups.

With the weapon resting in a cross body orientation, place the non firing hand under the fore end, place the firing hand on the top of the buttstock and press down while pulling up on the fore end. Once in port arms configuration, sling friction will hold the weapon in place. This position, however, will withstand only moderate movement. Rapid, dynamic movement will cause the weapon to drop back into military patrol ready mode. (Not necessarily a bad thing if you think about it).

I guess Tirth might have been hinting at the SUL carry mode as more appropriate for a self defence situation.

It provides a center chest "Index" and "safe muzzle direction" for 'most' occasions. And the least amount of variables to contend with before raising the weapon to make ready position.
