the most reliable cartridge!!

Post by shooter » Fri Jan 08, 2010 11:07 pm

Heres what the iof board have to say about the astram on their website:

http://ofbindia.gov.in/products/data/am ... /sc/15.htm

some highlights are:

The above improved characteristics make these cartridges suitable not only for use in general hunting, etc. but also for "competition shooting".

Our "Astram" cartridges have already found great favour with many renowned shooters in the competition shooting games.

Cartridges, so found acceptable after such stringent inspection schedule are only released in the market. No doubt, therefore, most customers prefer our cartridges only.

Reliability of our Astram Cartridges is par excellence.

Use of specially designed tubular anvils with quality percussion caps eliminates misfires which improve the confidence level in shooters.

Its been a while since ive used astram, so maybe people who have used them more recently would care to comment.

Recently I've only ever heard of Astram being sold in No. 1's... that and considering that it is a 32 gram load, I can't quite comprehend how & where any competition shooter could possibly use them! Earlier they used to come in almost all No.s and was an OK enough cartridge, though expensive... as all Indian made ammunition is... :P

A charge variation of 26.23 to 29.32 grains... Wow that is super consistent.
My match ammunition has a variation of under 0.05 grains on an average a variation of 0.001 grams can give a full caliber or more of vertical let alone a variation of more than 3 grains.

Hell I do ladder tests that have a two grain spread over twenty shots to find a accuracy node.

It is in English..;)

A ladder test is one where you load twenty cartridges starting at say 28.0 grains of Varget under a 105 grain Scenar.

You set up the target ideally at 200 or 300 meters, and shoot the bullets while aiming at the same point and plot where the impacts are. Then you look at the target and see where your impacts are. Typically you will get a window where the impacts are very close to each other. Hypothetically 29.1, 29.2 and 29.3 are very close. That is an accuracy node. You would then load a bunch of cartridges at each of these loads and shoot them to see which ones give you the best groups, and you would go with that.
The picture below shows a ladder test.

This one was done for a .260 Remington, and based on test I went with a load of 40.6 grains.

Guruji,

It is still a lil bouncer, can u please elaborate a more on it
"A ladder test is one where you load twenty cartridges starting at say 28.0 grains of Varget under a 105 grain Scenar. "
Use layman terms :)

On side note i recently went to buy ammo, there was no No 6 shot available, i tried 4 shops, they all had No1. I wonder why are they are producing No 1 :), its not used for Sports.
The packing of the No 1 shot was more like Diwali Crackers  , from no angle they looked like cartridge box. :D

It is layman terms.

Powder charges are weighed in grains. 28 is the starting wieght. You load the cartridges in incremental charges..
28.0, 28.1, 28.2 etc.. you can do it in .1 grain increments or whatever you wish upto about 0.5 grain weights.
Varget is a brand of Powder. You can select any that you wish.
105 Scenar refers to a 105 grain hollow point boat tail bullet made by Lapua in 6 mm. You could use any bullet you wish.

You then shoot these bullets sequentially at a target like the one shown and plot the shots.

As for the IOF ammo I cant comment, I havent used any in over twenty years.

It is about making your own ammunition. A very common practise across the world not just the US. Doesnt seem to have a foot hold in India, essentially due to the non-availability of components. I am sure if components were available, it would be common place.

Indian would be a correct assumption. However not all Indians are in India.
