Re: Suggest a knife for self-defence please
I would take a ASP type baton or baseball bat over a legal carry size knife any day, in a situation with multiple goons armed with knives. My favourite item of choice to keep in my car was an old pipe about 3 ft in length.

Right all you truncheon/baton advocates, seems truncheons/batons are restricted items and cannot be imported(Please check the attachment). That raises the question, are they permitted in India if their import is restricted?

There goes another tool out the window.
This is ridiculous and outright unreasonable. Its Legal to possess a knife with a 9" Blade, Its legal to carry around a knife with 3.5" blade but Illegal to carry a baton???

With kattas/illegal guns available almost freely to unlawful elements starting from around Rs 500 upwards, you are lucky if you do not get at least one of the goons in the group NOT armed with a firearm.in a situation with multiple goons armed with knives. My favourite item of choice to keep in my car was an old pipe about 3 ft in length.

Well its not that common in Mumbai and its surrounding areas at least unless the the guys are hardcore and working for the prominent "gangs". I state this from my admittedly limited experience, I may be wrong.

gents/ladies
let us keep in mind the original question. bike ride with GF. in the country side. not gangland of bollywood.
what he needs is something to make the wanne be goondas, think twice before taking any unwise action.
something which does not need arms permit for. nor looks offensive or threatening (until used).
batons are restricted if imports is the thought. one can easily make one. and if you buy in India then import point does not arise. the question with baton is what does the arms act say?
what ever anyone says. please try to disarm a men with a knife or sharp implement. not easy. Also what idiot would like to get close in front of a knife?
when police etc are confronted with riot crowd they look for the ring leaders, who tend not to be in the front rank, as its the front rank which will be first fired on. the leaders tend to be behind and push the people forward. once a gun is out of ammo the people can easy take down the gun owner.
however, if a man is wielding a knife with intent to do something the crowd tends to pull back, as no one wants to get cut.
and if you are swing a baseball bat who wants to come near you not me for sure.
lets screw our head tight and realize that we can not take care of every situation but can prepare and reduce most situation.

If you need defend yourself, a rolled newspaper can be as lethal as knife. 3"knife and rolled newspaper can be a deadly combination.

Pepper spray, one can for the OP and one for his GF. Please learn how to use properly as well... you don't want to end up macing yourselves! Spray, and in the confusion pedal away... for back up, keep a knife each, once again learn how to use them effectively. This all presupposes the fact that you/ your GF are not willing/ able to procure a handgun license.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Is mace legal in India ?
I personally like Spyderco Delica or Cara Cara
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=209
Again one should know how to use best thing is avoiding such situations. Also remember these are weapons and thus need to be respected and carried with all safety precautions.
I personally know of a tragic consequence because of a drunkard jostling, one young life lost other incarcerated for life in a foreign land.
Personally prefer baton as Yaj stated rod/baton always remember knife wound can easily be tagged as IPC 326 or 307 attempt to murder..
