There used to be this certain gentleman in africa, who would run down herds of elephant and drop them where they stood, with a 7mm...vague memory of about 600+elephants, all with the 7mm.And now, w ehave this travesty of a PH.How did he get labelled PH when hunting has been banned in India these last twenty years atleast? diff'rnt strokes for diffr'nt folks, i guess.

Yes, and Walter Bell shot nearly all of his Elephants in Africa with a 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer - single shots to the brain.
This story just illustrates that not only does a PH have to be able to shoot straight he also needs to use a suitable rifle/calibre/bullet.
Nobody would say that the 6.5x54 M-S is a suitable calibre for use on Elephants - and nowadays its` use isn`t legal on dangerous/thick skinned game in Africa - but the use of high Sectional Density ( long and heavy for calibre ) solid bullets is an absolute necessity. Having to use ten shots to kill this particular rogue Elephant is a travesty of sportsmanship and is a gross mockery of the term `humane` when applied to the despatch of an animal. To say I`m disgusted is an understatement.

That is disgusting!
Haven't heard of this so called PH but if they really wanted to do the job humanely they should have got in touch with people who are experienced in this. I can think of atleast a couple of names and it's not as if the wildlife department does not know about them. They shoot in Africa before anyone jumps to any conclusions.
Grumpy, Bell favoured the 7mm more than the 6.5X54 MS. I am pretty certain of this, unless ofcourse my memory is playing tricks again.
Asif, wasn't Bell one of the few to cross the 1000 elephant mark?
Mack The Knife

Looks like this is what we are going to see in the future-Shikar-execution style.Shoot a 'marauding' pig/boar/nilgai elephant whatever, and burn/ bury the carcass.Use a 303 LMG while you're at it-there must be plenty with any Indian Police Dept, on ready loan !
If anyone gets PETA excreta to this news please post here-about time we took them on face-to-face.
Mack The Knife, some 'records' state over 1200 jumbos.I believe he was forever wearing out shoes with all that running...
Best

Bell use both .275 ( 7x57 ) and 6.5x54 rifles but post 1902 favoured his Mannlicher Schoenauers - including a lightweight, 5 1/2 lb, 20" barrel carbine.

Where did you get that bit about the 400? I have my reservations about continued usage of the word PH...even more condemning, if he used a 400 cal rifle.
Even more funny is that the elephant was named bin laden, what should the PH be called? the hack of a writer didnt understand the implications of the flip side...could we call him anti animal for desecrating the memory of a magnificent animal and sic PETA on him ?

`PH` - Poor Hunter ? Pathetic Hunter ? Purple Haze ?
- The Hendrix reference concerns an`altered` state of mind.......which might explain that `PH`s` obscene performance !

Careful now Asif - that pond would have been just up the road.....`Avalon` is home territory for me !
Good quote though.

Re: professional? hunter?
This is going OT fast but if elephant bags were considered the late Clem Coetsee killed more than 16,000 elephants in his lifetime, a number that I doubt will ever be exceeded by anyone. Many of those were on culls, though. There were several others who exceeded Bell's total bag including Alan Pretorius, John Taylor and the current living record holder Tony Sanchez-Arrino.
In India most elephant attacks however are prompted by the severe degradation of the country's forest cover. Where do the political morons expect the animals to live? While I firmly believe that human life is more valuable than that of animals, the fact is that in India it is the complete incompetence of the government that has resulted in the current elephant crisis in Assam and other Northeastern states.

Mehul, the man Vs nature conflict has slowly been growing, I have seen a rogue elephant fatality and the least I can say is -the brute power required to spread a human over a couple of hundred meters should not be seen to be believed...
Grumpy,
Of the varlet PH, the Purpled Haze seems appropriate...
OT!!
Been at it for near on 20 years now Sir Grumpy of avalon!
First 'heard' the Trailer of the movie and died of laughter! had to get it! took me many years (In med school I remember we had a whole bunch of fellas who could quote MP &HG ad nauseum...met a couple in US this year, and they still can!)
I didnt use the part about "...scimitar tossing bints..." as the speaker gets angrier!:)
How do you find the anarcho-socialist disorder of MP&HG?

I prefer `The Life of Brian` as it happens - MP&TSFYHG is too chaotic......maybe even too anarchic. I just love the totally bizarre concept of someone who is being crucified singing `Always look on the bright side of life`!
Glastonbury, the Isle of Avalon or Ynnis-witrin ( the Isle of Glass or Isle of Crystal. ) is 5 miles away. We`re just off the extreme NE corner of the Somerset Levels which, before drainage, was thousands upon thousands of acres of wetland - lakes, marsh and bog.
St.Dunstan was born in our village, Athelney, where King Alfred burnt the cakes, is about 15 miles away. An American friend once said, disgustedly, that`You can`t take two steps without tripping over history around here`.
