That is a lot of money anywhere in the world. I assume you get to keep the trophy's.

If I get the elephant, then I might have to build a house around the trophy!

That's the price of fun here, sadly.
"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. I feel for you guys. However big bore ammo seems to be expensive everywhere. I wouldnt be surprised if the 458 ammo is just marginally higher than in Europe.
Ashar given the prices, a new house might be cheaper.

Namibia is not the greatest place to hunt cape buffalo. It is a paradise for plains game hunting. For cape buffalo, leopard and sable it is either Zimbabwe or Mozambique. Zambia is another place to hunt huge buffalo. It also has lechwe and sitatunga. They are graceful antelopes! Tanzania is very expensive and has too many hassles in getting your guns ammo there. There is a fee of $200.00 for each rifle. There are no such fees in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. I will be very happy to assist you with the information. Re: New Purchase 458 Win Mag
The price of .458 ammo seems to be quite reasonable in India. Last month I picked up few boxes of .458 Win by Harnody DGX 400 grain for $110 per/box and couple of boxes for .458 Lott -Harnody DGX 400 grain- for $120 per/box, from a dealer in Alberta. Federal Cape-Shock ammo is more expensive (around $130 to $180) because it uses Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. But even with cheap harnody DGX bullets I get good results. The ammo for .416 Rigby is quite expensive comparatively, I bought few boxes of Norma 400 grain Swift A Frame bullets it cost me almost almost $185 sometimes it's difficult to get it at even this price. Although the .416 Rigby is not too harsh in recoil & ballistically gives better results than .458 Win, being too expensive I don't shoot it on paper anymore. 458 Lott is a new addition into my battery, have not much experience with it -except couple of times at the range- so can't comment much about it. Reloading is other option I'm seriously considering, but I guess in India unfortunately it's not possible.HydNawab wrote:There is new ammo available for this rifle in New Delhi and Mumbai but expensive. Other than the argument because you can, what on earth would you use a .458 in NA/Canada for?

Asher,
Its a classic caliber called AFRICA by Winchester firing a 500 grain monolith & a SN bullets introduced in 1956 , I took my first cape Buff with .458 Winchester Model 70 in Tanzania , had one but parted with it and have a .460 Weatherby Magnum now instead. Its fun to fire these bigbores off your shoulder.
Congrats again

The ammo was available with Sharma in New Delhi and also with Bansons in Mumbai. The price of ammo ranges from Rs.350-Rs.550. I have bought myself a few to last me a lifetime. Most of them are 500 grains but I also have a few 350 grains ammo by Hornady and Remington.(Soft noses and Solids)
The grouping was at 1" at 30 yards. I could find 2 disintegrated bullets. Will put up pictures of the bullet in a day or two.
Cheers
