Re: New Purchase 458 Win Mag
Good buy Ashar, but the 458 win mag is everything which the Americans wanted in a dangerous game rifle but could not achieve it. With a 22 inch barrel it rarely attains the velocity advertised. If u have an option sell it and try for a 416 Righby or a 404 Jeffrey. Personally i prefer the 404 --- it is fun to shoot with its mild recoil.

There is new ammo available for this rifle in New Delhi and Mumbai but expensive. The price is 550 bucks a piece for a 500 grain cartridge by Hornady. 510 grains 400 grains, 350 grains ammo by Federal are also available with an option of soft noses or solids.

I am new to this forum. I am thrilled to see so many shooting enthusiasts in India. I had to leave India to pursue my interest in firearm ownership, shooting and hunting. Your entry on 458 Win Mag caught my attention. I agree with shooter50 comments. 458 Win is no doubt fun to shoot but few are taken to Africa, because of its performance. 416 Rigby would be an ideal substitute if you plan to hunt big game in either India or Africa. 404 Jeffrey is another classic that has proved itself all over the world. Because of the proprietary nature the ammo is very dear. 416 Rem is a best compromise. I have rifles from .22LR to 416 Rigby and take them to hunt all over the world where ever hunting is legally available. Because I reload the ammo, I have the luxury of choosing any projectile of my choice. I am so glad I found this forum. Would any one arrange a hunt for me in India? Have great fun.
Cheers, Shivashankar

Or you can carry it to Africa and back with a prior permission from the Commissioner of Police.

A very expensive way to punch holes in a paper target.HydNawab wrote:There is new ammo available for this rifle in New Delhi and Mumbai but expensive. Re: New Purchase 458 Win Mag
I posted that with Asars Africa trip in mind. If you are going to use the 458 mag in India then target shooting is all you can do, but it is not all that expensive because one or 2 shots with a 458 mag is a group !!!!

Re: New Purchase 458 Win Mag
I would not think of taking the 458 to Africa. Reason: They have very nice guns in calibers like the 416 Rigby, 458 Win Mag, 375 Mag and the 470NE.
The gun I want to take is a Jeffery's 450/400 double. Will post pictures in December.
Cheers

Re: New Purchase 458 Win Mag
I recently got a quote from Die Keiler in Namibia. 1 Kudu, 1 Zebra, 1 Steinbuck, 1 Gemsbok, 1 Blesbuck, 1 Warthog and 1 Blue Wilderbeest for a total price of $10500 including the trophy fees. This is a 10 Day safari.I want to add 2 cape buffalos to my license but someone here suggested that Tanzania is the place for CBs.MoA wrote:The Africa trip I guess. Where are you going? I also got a quote for 3 Cape buffalos 10 Day safari for $24450 in Selous,Tanzania with Jack Brittingham's Tanzania Adventures. I think this is too expensive for just 3 buffalos. There is no point in taking a double for a plains game safari so I was thinking of just getting 2 Buffalos, 1 Sable, 1 Gemsbok and a Zebra. Still waiting for the quote from other PHs.
The trophy fee is not that much but the problem is the daily rate.
This is the email I received from Classic Safaris.
"Dear Ashar Raoof,
Thank you for your interest and contacting us. We apologise for the late reply, we returned Friday evening from our hunting areas.
Currently we have a moratorium on leopard hunting in Namibia for 2009 but we will only have clarity on the 2010 season during November. I will include the leopard just for your figures and budgeting purposes.
We recommend 21 days simply on the number of species that you would like to hunt as well as a few of them can be time consuming and very single minded type hunts like the Leopard and crocodile for instance and then also to spend time concentrating on trophy quality.
21 days 1x1 @ $1,250.00 per day and your wife is at no charge.
Buffalo $ 3,125.00 each
Hippo $ 2,800.00
Crocodile $ 2,200.00
Impala $375.00
Zebra $ 675.00
Sable $ 4,000.00
Leopard $3,500.00
Daily Rates Include
Accommodation
3 full meals per day
Beverages/refreshments (in moderation)
Daily laundry service
Services of a licensed professional hunter with support staff
Hunting vehicles
Field preparation
Road transfers to and from Katima Mulilo's Mpacha airport
Hunting licenses
Other Costs not Included
Flights to and from Katima Mulilo's Mpacha airstrip. Air Namibia has regular scheduled flights from Windhoek at very reasonable costs.
15% VAT (government charge) on daily rates only
Accommodation/s prior to and after safari
Thank you once again for your interest and contacting us, we welcome any questions that you may have and look forward to your reply.
Respectfully,
Vaughan Fulton

Thats $42925 + taxidermy fee. Have to decide if I want to spend that kind of money.
