I had recently bought a Eddystone model 17 bolt action 30 06 rifle, made in USA. From the past 5-6 months I have watched the rifle market very closely. A Remington model 760 pump action 30 06 in good condition should be priced around 1.70 lacs in Punjab.
I said Punjab because it depends on which of part India the weapon is being sold. Arms are highly priced in cities like Chandigarh and Mumbai. In Punjab and Haryana they are mediumly priced and in UP and Rajasthan they are cheap.

Regards,

Vineet

Vineet,
Have you seen one going for 1.7,cause at that price I think it is a steal in our context.

James: The Remington Model 760 is a good rifle, great for the fellow used to a pump action shotgun. It's drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Advantage over a bolt action is its speed of operation; disadvantages are weaker extraction (which means the chamber has to be kept clean, not that easy to do), relatively poor trigger pull, and a bit less accuracy. It does not readily take down for cleaning. And has somewhat of a propensity to freeze up in freezing rain, hardly something you'd worry about, though. The same thing can happen when heavily oiled and carried in dusty conditions. But a good drenching of the inside of the receiver with carburator cleaner, followed by WD40, usually takes care of that.

Were I am at this rifle is not that popular, when I get to see one it's usually because the owner has neglected it and the action has become sticky, or because he wants something done about the trigger. I have seen one with a bent action bar, as a result of a stuck case, and the application of excessive force to open the bolt.

Chambers are usually tight, and for the reloader a "small base" resizing die is required. Again not a concern for you.

Because you can't readily look into the barrel and chamber, I'd recommend shooting it with the ammo you intend to use before buying a used one, to make sure it feeds and extracts freely.

As an aside, a used 760 for US$ 250 would be USED. Though there are considerable regional differences in popularity, which would affect the price.

Cheers.
