I am chilean with no family or ancestors ties (that I know of) to India but an admirer of indian culture ....with special attention to food!.I am biochemist working
at a Medical Faculty in the capital,Santiago.My special interest are combat rifles from around 1850 to 1950.I have been collecting as much information as I can about
SMLE Enfields made at the Ishapore Rifle Factory so I thought this Forum could be a good place for this purpose ...and I am not disappointed really!

Hello Pudu,

Here's a warm welcome to IFG...! Good to have you on board. Its not common to have interest here from your end of the world. The last South American participation at IFG as far as I can remember was a bizarre offer for the sale of an entire arms manufacturing company/plant in Argentina!...

We do have a common interest with regard to the time period (1850-1950)... I regard it as the golden age of firearms development. Almost everything mainstream since then, has been a story of decline in standards and general tendency towards economy in manufacture.

With regard to historical Indian firearms, the irony is most of us lay-Indians don't have a clue. Since the old socialist-culture of the state and its machinery is not geared towards being generous with such...rather most information.

Anyway have fun at the forums!

Thank you cc! Really a good one your story when those fellows confused the .410 shells with .303 blanks! I am going to tell it to my 15 old son this evening (anyway he looks
me with a face of "there you go again" when I start lecturing about the SMLE).Regards pudu

regarding the mention of the SMLE being manufactured in India, I guess the Ishapore Rifle Factory in India began producing a new type of rifle known as the Rifle 7.62 mm 2A, which was based on the SMLE Mk III*[64] and was reworked to use the 7.62 mm NATO round, as cited even in Wikipedia. I am unsure if the Ishapore factory manufactured SMLE as it is ... would love to know more about it, as other members input

Oh yes they did manufacture .303brit guns quite early in the XX century. In 1929 they were already making .410 shotguns out of worn out .303 rifles.Lots,lots of information in this book (I don't have it yet) "INDIAS ENFIELDS" by Robert W. Edwards 4th Edition, The Consortium Press,Box 190, Keedysville MD 21756,USA I am afraid we are in the wrong thread with this subject
