Petronel 16th or 17th century firearm.

Post by sudesh » Thu Jul 09, 2009 7:15 pm

A Petronel is a 16th or 17th century firearm. It was the fire-arm which developed on the one hand into the pistol and on the other into the carbine. The name (French petrinel or poitrinal) was given to the weapon either because it was fired with the butt resting against the chest (French poitrine, Latin pectus) or because it was carried slung from a belt across the chest. Petronels are found with either matchlock or wheellock mechanisms.

saw a pic of something same in a weapons encyclopedia . the piece i saw there was made in mysore and was a flintlock. it had open ports in front of the cylinders to enable safe discharge in case of a flash over bet the chambers. apparently that did not work for the wpn as it had been partially destroyed during firing.(making poor rip offs is ingrained it seems)
rest you have a great piece of history in your hands.
