Fire arms always end up with bluing faded at the places where they are handled most. It sure adds character to the Old Betsie, but this very thing works in favor of a prospective buyer when ever you out to to sell them. In case of side arms, it is generally the front and rear grip strap and in case of shotguns and rifles it's the bolt knob, opening lever and the bottom ahead of the trigger guards that start fading. Well, here's what I do. I buy a bottle of Clear Nail Polish and coat these areas periodically, and voila!!! You sure can coat the entire piece in case of a pistol or a revolver. This prevents rusting as well caused by body acids, more so if one is used to carrying them inside the waist without the holster. One should wipe all the lubricants off before application though. I have seen gun dealers putting a coat of varnish on the displayed fire arms but that makes the gun metal look jaundiced. This has worked for me over the years and I see no reason why it shouldn't work for you all.
Cheers!!!

Make sure there's no Acetone (drying agent) in the polish!

In fact a bit of Acetone mixed in your wife or girlfriend's nail polish bottle that has thickened over the months can help it spread evenly on the metal.
