True, if you have been around dogs you hesitate to do something to the street dog that makes it impossible to take yours out for a peaceful walk. I have dreamt up horrible retributions for the two that always chase us in the colony (they are the alphas) followed by another four. But the wifey always says they are the same as our un and should be given the same consideration. But the trouble is every winter there is a new pack of strays in the colony. So my dog only goes out at night to a nearby park and a quick walk with me threatening the other dogs with a stick. But there are a few one would love to be rid of...maybe we could send them to the one who shooed the MCD off the strays.

I am not averse to putting down a dog if I am certain it poses a real and present danger or if it is close to death and I am unable to help it but this carte blanche attitude towards man's only friend by some of us makes me wonder if such people have ever been around dogs.
I do understand how you feel. I would have pretty much written the same thing. Please understand that what I am proposing is not the final take on the subject. Let me tell you that every day I see sick, wounded dogs on the road. Some have festering wounds. I see street kids throwing stones at them and adults also abusing them. I am sure you see the same. If these poor beasts could speak they would be rather dead than alive. What I have thought of is 'wishful thinking at a national level'. Also think about the fact that if such an operation is undertaken, not all who are working within the operation are dog lovers. Its like not every train driver is a railways enthusiast, he considers it a job that pays him. So levels of dedication are required.
I myself have a stray, and have vowed never to buy a dog but only 'adopt' one off the streets. Yes even I don't mind our streets full of strays but does everyone else?? And I am sure my options are better and more practical than mass culling. Singapore is one such city where they don't have strays. The rules for dog ownership are very strict.

So they should be killed for their own good? Sounds like the PETA to meBruno22 wrote:I see street kids throwing stones at them and adults also abusing them. I am sure you see the same. Until Timmy's narrative I wasnt aware that US also had wild pack of dogs or issue with stray dogs.
Shooting dogs does invoke very passionate reaction any where. I read an interesting article by a Pakistani base commander of Jacobabad airbase which is/was shared with US transport command. Just like IAF airbase practice even PAF to mitigate bird plane strike accidents assigns officers / airmen on Bird shooting details, basically shoot any feral animal that could cause accident. PAF airmen shot stray dogs and this offended US army officers sensibilities who ordered his MPs to arrest PAF airmen on birds shooting detail which was a major breach of protocol. It was a cultural and safety issue of which US army officer was ignorant off that PAF had actually lost a F 16 to wild boar on the runway. http://kaiser-aeronaut.blogspot.com/200 ... tales.html ( BTW this officer writes pretty straight forward account of events)
Again every situation requires its own measured response but once such animals become a threat in any form they have to be culled.
Best
