0.177 Caliber Gun Cleaning Kit

Post by shadowphaxone » Mon Apr 27, 2009 3:13 am

Hi,

Does any member know any whether gun cleaning kit is available for 0.177 Caliber? I have tried local shops and they are saying none is available for 0.177.

Since shooting competitions use 0.177's, there should be some method that shooters use to clean the bore. If any member has any data regarding the subject, please post it here.

Regards :D  :D

If I am not mistaken there is someone (IIRC based in Calcutta or Mumbai) who imports/ deals in Otis cleaning products. I think a member had also posted their contact details on the forum, let me see if I can dig it out...

Cheers!

OK Shadow, just found the thread http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?p=35243

Am copy pasting the relevant bit below:

Mr. B.C. Jain,
PMB Impex & Consultants Pvt. Ltd.,
5 Fancy Lane,
Calcutta - 700 001.

Tel.: 033- 2488257

The above are old contact details but hopefully still valid. They sent me my pull through via post. They also sell their products at most national level competitions.

Phorguncare (a Calcutta based company) makes a decent set in 0.177 - a three piece cleaning rod, brass jag, bronze brush and nylon brush. Was priced at around 350 Rs last year. Joy Biswas at Aimco used to carry it. Contact him for details.

I would suggest use a pull through and use some Cleaning solution these works much better than the cleaning rods and cleaning kits, as slight wrong handling of the cleaning rod or the bronze brush can actually harm the rifling of the gun. You need to be extremely carful while using these.

Whereas the Pull through can be made with any nylon thread the best one can be made from the Nylon thread used for fishing, works as a charm.

Fishing line barel length, a nail that will slip thru the barrel, vikram's ganji with a little oil and you are done 8) .

Heey guys

for heavens sakes

Please do not to put anything metal down the barrel If you use a metal cleaning set you will definitley
do harm to the crown In airguns this is of the utmost importance.

What is recommended is a crown saver or a fishing line as suggested by dev but without the nail
The method of applying is you push it down fro the muzzle attach the patch when you puller exits the breach and pull in the same direction as teh pellet will travel . This is done so that the burrs if any will point in the same direction.

If a match pistol it will have to be resighted after cleaning .

unless using moly paste for lubing the pellets ( slik ) you should not need to clean the barrel of a .177 air rifle at all

mah tuppence worth

Normally if the nail is chosen well , it just goes down the barrel without touching any of the insides. You are right is saying that you attach the patch just as the line reaches its end. I normally just pull it out in one direction and then begin all over again. Another thing is that I don't clean my air rifle and pistol bores all that much.

I agree totally. In my experience Cotton buds work the best. Oil the front end and leave the rear dry, and always put a tight fitting pellet behind it before firing in a safe direction. The rod and jag are useful when there's a pellet that's stuck in the barrel, or if you're restoring an abused and neglected airgun.
I wouldn't recommend mono filament (fishing line) as it can cut into the crown. A pull-through made from Badminton gut is safe and as effective. A loop at the end of the pull-through negates the need for a nail.
Mack The Knife has an excellent post on how to make pull-throughs. If you must use a button try getting a plastic bead and thread it into the pull-through (beads of all shapes and sizes can be had from any desi market -from the kiosks that string necklaces).

Thank you all for the post. I have been thinking about this for the last day and with new inputs from the posts here, I think i can improvise a method for cleaning. Don't want to spell it out yet, as i need to verify it myself. Will post soon.
