Not allowed to carry during model code of conduct period?
Hi,
Learnt something new today from the local cops. During the period of the model code of conduct, we are not allowed to carry our guns unless we get written permission from some committee formed by the local licensing authority. So one needs to make an application to the local police station stating the need/reason for carrying and they will scrutinize each case and issue permission accordingly.
This is the first I have heard of this. I thought the election commission had only prohibited inter city/state transport of arms during the elections? What's the situation in the other parts and is this action of our city police in accordance with the law/rules of the election commission or have they misunderstood the EC orders?

You are not allowed to carry a firearm while the model code of conduct is in force. Also the exemption (rarely if ever given) granted by the local licensing authority is valid only within the district. If you carry a firearm within a specific distance of a polling booth, the security agencies would be well within their rights to shoot you.

Amit888,
Please avoid using text speak on this forum. It is disliked by members.
Regarding the email, I am sure it should be a copy / paste job.... if you are getting formatting, then first paste it into Notepad and later copy from Notepad and paste it here. If there is any difficulty, pls PM me and I'll give you my email id to send to and I'll post it here...
By the way, you could always tell us the gist of the court hearing article...

Then I won't be voting or going anywhere near a polling booth. What's to stop them from shooting me if they spot something on me which to them resembles a firearm or weapon?penpusher wrote:You are not allowed to carry a firearm while the model code of conduct is in force. Also the exemption (rarely if ever given) granted by the local licensing authority is valid only within the district. If you carry a firearm within a specific distance of a polling booth, the security agencies would be well within their rights to shoot you.
IMO, if they shoot anyone for carrying a firearm near a polling booth they would need to do some serious explaining in court. Also, I'm still not so sure about the no carry rule.

I feel shooting someone for just bearing a firearm (near a polling booth) is taking this theoretical rule to extremes.....
Any case, they should first enquire about the person's bonafide and then take such an extreme decision!!
It could well be a police office in mufti Just my opinion.....
Nishant

Re: Not allowed to carry during model code of conduct period?
dear abhijeet
thanks for putting this up for all to read ,
but i would like some one to give me their view on my point
if you visit the nrai web site it mentions for members of NRAI as per a certail order it is not compulsary or necessary for sports persons to deposit their arms ,
i was called by the local police station for my arms verification , they didnt ask me to deposit the arms ,
i handed them the copy of the order that i down loaded from the nrai web site , copy of my membership cards and a copy of my arms licence , they were satisfied ,
i informed them that i will be shooting at the range during this period ,
does this also mean that being a member of NRAI / MRA , we can still go to the range for practice with our arms which are for the particular sport of shooting , what if the range is out of the city limits but within the state limits , and the licence of the person is for the state he recides in
awaiting some clearity from the GURUS
regards
colthead

Re: Not allowed to carry during model code of conduct period?
Seeing this piece of news, I think the cops have confused the screening committee requirement for deposit of firearms with the carry of firearms issue. This is just my opinion and I may be completely wrong but it makes sense.
