The last two Indian cheetahs were hunted down in 1947 (some reports say 3 in the 50s) marking their extinction in the Indian subcontinent.
India had approached Iran to lend a pair for cloning and re-introduction in India. But with their grassland habitats wiped out, where would they stay ? In the largest zoo in the country probably. Good thing the Iranians turned down the request.
