78 revolvers stolen from shop
This is a ridiculous news hopefully none of members here were impacted.
Tribune Reporters
Jalandhar/ Hoshiarpur, April 10
It is perhaps the first time that such a robbery has taken place in the state during the past two decades and has many worried, especially keeping in view the polls. Some unidentified persons reportedly decamped with a cache of revolvers and ammunition from a fire arms and ammunition shop, Ajit Singh and Sons, in the wee hours today.

Just goes to show how unimaginative our administrators are when it comes to firearms and their regualtion and how easily a seemingly justifiable course of action taken by the babus can be easily overturned and taken advantage of by those who have utter disregard for the law.

Looks like a scam to me. Knowing todays dealers, they might have done it themselves.

Re: 78 revolvers stolen from shop
It's pretty obvious that this rule needs to be scrapped.......fire arms are only secure when they are in the possession and custody of the owner....thank God the licencing branch in Delhi thinks differently, they are extremely efficient and it is a pleasure to deal with them .....
given the prices these days the loss in this case is pretty substantial......not to forget the damage these arms can cause if they fall in the wrong hands...

Re: 78 revolvers stolen from shop
I have never been able to understand this rule of depositing firearms with gun dealers/police stations in safe custody during elections.I doubt if any of the licence holders would be mad enough to go on a shooting spree during elections . Mercifully in Delhi one is not asked to deposit firearms with dealers . Though quite a few people do deposit them.
It is sad that the dealer lost 78 Revolver.Hope these firearms are recovered before any serious damage is caused.

Its time the government abolish this practice or take responsibility and provide free insurance worth current market value for all deposited weapons.

Re: 78 revolvers stolen from shop
Those bearucrats needs to be treated in mental hospitals who order deposit of firearms. During election violence 95% arms used are illegal among the licensed used mostly licenses are issued on recommendations of politicians .In case some one wants to defend himself optons are nil. Even policemen came to my place asking for deposit of arms I wanted to go to high court as I am a lawyer but my parents stopped me so even I have to relent. When home secretary extends the validity of license to all india he becomes the licensing authrority not dms.So DM have no bussiness to order depositing of arms entered in alLindia category, secondly will thE DM pay the cost of stolen weapons estimated as 2 crores? As far as I know in Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala regions many license holders have rare types of imported handguns which are very expensive ones and these people own these not as hobby but many of them have enmities with regard to property or other disputes and these people face real threat. So depositing of arms by common lawabiding people itself encourages anti-social elements to commit crimes.

I fully agree with you dsingh, you should have approached High Court, unless we make noise, nobody will care. These bureaucratic/politician/police nexus is cancerous.

Sanjay
After the robbery,
They did just fall in to the WRONG HANDS...
One can only imagine what they would do with it...

Re: 78 revolvers stolen from shop
It is my request to lawyers reading similar cases should take them up in courts, and highlight them, as lawyers are the people who can keep checks on government with help of courts. Ordinary people are too busy earning their daily bread.
1)Taking away firearms issued on license, without any violation of law by license holder, defeats the very purpose of having firearm with license.
2)This kind of unprovoked behavior by government, encourages people to keep unlicensed firearms for self defense.
3)Majority of crimes are committed by illegal weapons(terrorists & criminals do not go for "licensed" weapons)
4)On basis of what data, "licensed" weapons are been asked to be deposited "en masse"
