.22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
Guys,
I have read some reviews about the .22 in comparison with other handgun calibres. I want to know whether using high velocity .22LRs would have the same performance when compared to .32 ACP.
Is this a good calibre for self defense? I know a shot in the head with a catapult would do but realistically speaking, should I go in for a .22?(Not that I want to shoot anyone in the head) I had read somewhere that its not the gun, but the man behind the gun. Also, I guess ammo is cheaper and easily available.
Your valued suggestions please.
Cheers
Ashar

It's not only about the energy produced by a .22LR bullet. Center (should have read rim, sorry) Rim fires are apparently not very reliable in pistols.
My view is 5 to 9 shots of .22 would definitely stop a BG in his tracks. And it's so easy to shoot that you can (almost) fire it like a full auto gun. That is if there is no FTF. I'll report about the reliability when I get mine

Re: .22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
hello ashar
strictly no for .22
its my honest and personal sort of choice however .22 can be a self defence caliber but you see a lot of consideration are there regarding self defence
if you fire .22 in your selfdefence , the opponent may not even hear the shot is fired.
there should be atleast some noise impact on the opponent
i would like to have a "danda" rather than having a .22
its just like that.
i am eger to know what others say.

The noise factor is not true. HV .22 ammo will break the sound barrier and there's a loud crack. Penetration in gelatin is 6 to 8 inches.
The stopping power debate has been raging on for ever with a small majority saying NO but none of them so far volunteering to offer themselves as test subjects. You should listen the folks who say yes and then make up your mind.

I prefer a larger caliber for self-defense. In a situation like that, stopping power is what is most crucial. So a balance must be found between the ease of availability, the stopping power of the round, and your comfort with firing it rapidly.

Re: .22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
Neither the .22lr nor a .32 ACP have any stopping power.I do believe that this has been discussed before.
Ultimately, it is the shot placement that is important.

.32 doesn't really have great stopping power. The s&w Long is even worse than the ACP.

Sitar, see BJL's post. He talks about a larger caliber. .25ACP is also larger than .22.

No. But I knew what the topic was. BJL said he prefered a larger caliber. I was merely pointing the .32 S&W long is also larger but really weak when it comes to energy.
The .32 ACP does not really have the capability to stop someone in his tracks. Neither do even larger handgun calibers many a times.

Re: .22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
I think that the humble .22 lr has actually killed more people than any other caliber. Just something I heard on the net.
Yes shot placement beats caliber any day. It is better to have a weapon you can shoot accurately, than one which will make a huge amoutn of sound, and cause you to miss the target due to flinch, recoil and a host of other factors.
That being said, please do not buy a Walther P22. They are plain junk. Especially if you're shooting a lot. Then again that is a different thread.

Re: .22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
My experience with my Browning Buckmark pistol is that .22 pistols are very sensitive to quality of ammo. My pistol jams less with certain brands of ammo. Therefore another factor in India is access and ability to afford imported .22 ammo.

Re: .22 LR Vs .32 ACP?
and to repeat what penpusher and i said, .32 stopping power is abysmal. And to rephrase what i said, a bigger caliber doesn't necessarily mean more ME.
