Also bear in mind that with heavier scopes, likelihood of breakage on springers will increase. A lighter (small magnification) scope will move with the gun, and a heavier scopes greater inertia of rest will make it tend to resist moving with recoil. The highest magnification reliable scope I know of that is airgun rated is Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X.

As a thumb rule, one should go for the lowest magnification that will suffice.
Ai,

A number of scopes are used on weapons upto 20MM with no side effects. So do not quite see the logic in the blanket statement that heavy scopes will break on a springer.
Last I checked the recoil on an airgun is miles lower than that on a .338 Lapua Magnum.
Then again I do not shoot air guns.

MoA,

the problem with using scopes on springer's is not the recoil per se but the nature of the recoil.

Agree with that penpusher ...the unique 2 way recoil in spring guns...

MOA,

Just to go into a bit more detail on airgun recoil-

When the pellet leaves the muzzle, the gun recoils back as would any other gun. Then, the piston head slams into the front of the spring tube/chamber, moving the gun forward. Add to that the vibrations involved with these recoils, plus the vibration caused by the spring.

A scope designed for 20mm or .50 or any other caliber is meant to withstand the recoil of the gun moving backwards.

Airgun scopes are designed to handle bidirectional recoil.

So scope not designed for airguns will get damaged, regardless of their ability to withstand large caliber firearm recoils. This applies to the best known names, and Bushnell, Leopold, Burris etc specifically mention airgun scopes as such.

Yes dev,

Actually I have got my answer to the question thus

"The 3-9x is finally answered. Its a combination of usability, popularity, manufacturing cost and selling cost. The target market is hunters hunting at 100 to 200 yards."

I am okay with you closing the thread
