Emu Chicks

Dear All,
Recently I came across a forum on agriculture, very similar to ours.

I find they are doing Rabbits, Turkeys & Emu farming in south India.

I wonder if any member has any information about the Emu in particular.

If I can get a dozen odd eggs by courier I could get them hatched here & Introduce these beautiful birds to a sanctury closeby, or let them roam around freely in and around my farms

I believe they can be as much as 8 feet tall and weigh almost 140 Kgs at 4 years.

Would it be legal to get Emu eggs, get them hatched.

there used to be an emu farm near my native place in AP and they used to sell emu eggs and meat.i paid a visit there in 2006 but didnt enquire about it on my last visit to india in 2008.i will call my dad and let you know if they are still operating.you are right about their height.they are very tall birds.

One more question

How big would the egg be?
would it survive a courier transit!

the eggs are quite big and buying chicks would be a good option too.never tried eggs by courier but i have personally travelled on bikes with geese and japanese bantam eggs in steel cans filled with soft sand.i will send you a PM as soon as i receive the info.

Hi Shamsher,

An individual called Mr. JD Merchant owns a farm near Kamshet (Close to Pune) He has a few Emus in his farm. We used to take camps to a YMCA campsite close to his farm. We used to take kids to his farm to show them the Emus. Let me try and get his contact details. May be he can help you.

Also, There is this dhaba called Toni da dhaba (on NH4 , the old mumbai pune highway). It is located 25km from lonavala towards pune. They have emus at the dhaba and serve emu meat as well(i am not entirely certain about the meat part)

i will answer your queries one by one (i am supposed to be an authority on the subject by virtue of an university research station at Pudukottai District, where i work and there isalot of ineraction between us)
1. The eggs are large about the size of a coconut and the hatching % is very low.
2. they cannot be sent by courier
3. chicks cost on an average of Rs. 2500/- per bird
4. The chicks are hatched in a state of the art incubator
5. the chicksat birth are very delicate birds and with ahigh mortality
6. the adults cost about Rs. 25000/ each
7. the reearch staion spends on an average Rs. 2000000/- a year on the various aspects of the birds
8. you can, if you can afford it buy ajuvenile for about 10000/- and grow it
9. contrary to their appearance they are very docile birds, unlike ostriches which are quite ferocious.
10. you can not release them in the wild as they are exotic birds.
11. Quite some people have them in their farms as a status symbol.

the cost of the meat/kg is rs. 400/- the oil or the rendered fat which is supposed to be good for arthiritis costs about rs. 1000/ litre. i will post the details of the institute sometime later.
