Sorry to hear about the loss, know what all you all must have felt like. In the 80's I lost 3 pro camera bodies with prime lenses, flash meter etc

Mehul,
Any dog ever born could be knocked down or killed very swiftly by a reasonably strong man with a knife. Have all the dogs you want as pets but I doubt they would make much of a difference as far as stopping thieves or armed intruders is concerned.

I know a family who live in South Africa with their pack of Rhodeshian Ridgebacks. Several years ago 5 armed robbers attemted to break into their home throught the kitchen door at night. All hell broke loose when the dogs attacked them, end result was 4 dead robbers, 1 seriously injured, he could not use the semi auto rifle which was slung around his body. 3 dogs died due to gun shot wounds.

The Ridgeback, singly or in a pack, will silently track the lion to its lair and only on discovery of its quarry will it give tongue; tanatlising, feinting, darting in and out, just beyond the reach of those fearful slashing claws, with the nonchalance of a matador; harassing and wearing it down until that majestic creature, bewildered by such elusive impudence and weary of trying to shake off its tenacious nuisance, presents a sitting target of injured majesty."

Sat,

Precisely my point - in the old days, people would have packs of dogs which were exandable on estates and set them loose on anyone who might dare to enter. A few dogs would get killed and the commotion would give the residents time to come out with swords, guns or whatever and finish the invaders off. How practical is that today?

Take a single 1200 sq ft apartment, the average size for a family in India, and keeping a Rhodesian Ridgeback in it would be impossible. Even a Dobermann Pinscher or German Shepherd would be difficult to keep in the average Indian home. And, in this day and age when we get as attached to our pets as we do, how many could have a dog as an expendable animal?

In an apartment, I would think that a little Pomeranian or a Dachshund would be good enough as an early warning device. Defending the place would have to be done by the residents with guns, knives or whatever.

Cheers,

Mehul

I`m really sorry to hear about your break-in Dev - a totally crap thing to happen. Don`t be surprised if you have bouts of searing rage and black depression over the next couple of weeks - it`ll take a while to get over the incident. I don`t know if you`re married but if you are you mght find that your wife takes it much harder than you. I know how we felt when we got a call from the bank early one morning saying that multiple payments were attempting to be made simultaneously in London and New York on one of our credit cards.....and that`s nothing like as bad as a break-in.
If your burglars are anything like the `professionals` over here make sure that you keep your home properly locked in the future as the b*****ds know that contents insurance will pay for replacement equipment and they come back after a couple of months to grab the new stuff.
If you have guns you need a gunsafe - and make sure it`s bolted both to the floor and wall.
Mehul is absolutely right - any police officer will tell you that the best deterent of all is a dog.
My place is like Fort Knox - it has to be with all the guns here. The outside doors are reinforced and have multi-point bolts operated by the door key and are alarmed. The windows have locks, the rooms have IR motion detectors and my built-in gun cupboard has two steel-skinned doors with the outer one being alarmed. The alarm itself is remote monitored. For all that I still think my dogs are likely to be the most effective at putting burglars off - even the postmen know not to put mail through the letter box as all hell lets loose if they do........................
Hope you get over it soon.

Yeah I need to find a gun safe cause today was really funny. I put the QB in one almirah, strip the marlin down and hide it in pieces and then take the Baikal with me. I would use police connections but I am saving them for a greater need if it arises (no thank you lord enough already). A pup would be nice as a first alarm funda or something that makes the thieves look for an easier target. So next time some one visits and pup thinks 'meat on the hoof'? ;-)

Get a gun safe if you can find one in India or get a wall safe. That is a must if you have guns at home and there is a possibility that you may be away. Also, as penpusher points out, an alarm may be a very good idea. I know from a friend who works there that the Canadian Inter Inter company is planning to sell it's integrated alarm and warning systems in India next year - that system not only sounds an alarm on the spot, it auto dials upto five phone numbers to wanr people about a particular house being broken into. It is a fantastic system and not very expensive - if you want me to, I could point you to whoever is their dealer in your part of the country.

Also, do get a handgun by all means, but, as Saptarshi points out, it would not be of any use if you do not happen to be on the spot. If you buy one, get a 22 lr because you would be able to use the same ammunition for both your handgun as well as your rifle in case you have to fight your way out of a mess.

Personally, I am not sure that a dog is a good idea. Any dog ever born could be knocked down or killed very swiftly by a reasonably strong man with a knife. Have all the dogs you want as pets but I doubt they would make much of a difference as far as stopping thieves or armed intruders is concerned.

Also, in most places, the police are FULLY IN THE KNOW about the identity of thieves working in various localities. If you have contacts in the higher echelons of the police force, just talk to them and tell them that you want your stuff back and would not be interested in filing a complaint. Chances are 999 out of 1000 that you would get everything that was stolen exactly as it was taken. I have seen this happen on more than one occasion in different parts of India.

Actually after what we have been thru earlier we aren't miffed much. Anyway we have nothing of huge value at home. We don't keep much jewellry(my wife hasn't got that gold fascination) and cash stays in the bank till we withdraw small amounts for day to day needs. I am not worried about loosing my air guns but I am worried about my .22. The cops have a nasty way of implying that you sold it to a terrorist (didn't ya know they favour .22's over AKs ;-) ) and are now making a false complaint. So I have talked to a few gun safe manufacturers but they only export them. So I guess I'll have to really look for one again. Till then there'll be pieces of Marlin all over the house .

Regards,

Dev

Dev,

Would a small/medium sized Godrej steel cupboard not do?

Failing which you could think of having one made to your specs.

I had no idea gun safes were made in India, leave alone exported.

BTW, there was a time when the Naxalites were pretty hot for .22lr ammo. I know because a club member was caught giving them KF ammo. He was in the cooler for two years but has been out since and recently even went for a leopard hunt to Nepal.

Yes, that was my next option. After our wedding the wife and I had decided not to have any of them ugly metal monsters but I guess we have no option left. But in previous robberies at my parents place we have seen the almirah cut open with some welding torch...yes even the small safe was cut open.

Your friend hasn't changed much has he? ;-)

Sorry to hear about this incident Dev!

The word *dogs/pups* dragged me into this topic!

If you are not looking for any particular breed and would like to adopt a stray pup who has been vaccinated, then do let me know! There are 8 of them who are being taken care of by students at a college in Delhi and need to find them homes!

I have been looking after strays since quite sometime but dont keep them as pets anymore. I can vouch this about them- they make amazing guards and are absolutely loyal!
