i shall attempt to answer your questions, pointwise:

1. No you do not need any written permission from the airline.
2. i made it a point to phone jet airways customer service 15 days before depature. they had no idea of the rules, and did not communicate to the ground staff at all. so when i turned up at the airport, the changu-mangus at the desks had no idea what to do.
3. yes, go to the aiport check in counter early. the process takes 30 minutes, and the airline crew take 45 minutes to figure what to do.
4. when you declare it as an airgun, heathrow security are simply uninterested and will not insist on any suitcases/locks at all. some bright spark at the airline might, who was told by a friend of a friend of a friend.

heathrow is a huge airport. there is a constant stream of travellers carrying their shotguns/airguns/rifles thorugh it enroute to their sporting/safari/hunting venues. anybody who says carrying legal airguns/firearms through heathrow has bug*3r all idea of what he is talking about.

the last bit of information is the answer i got after i rang heathrow security directly in the wake of the glasgow bombings.

Have a query with regard to importing of .177 Air Rifles by members of Shooting Clubs -

Is there a limit for the number of air-guns that the member can import within a specified period of time?

No limit is mentioned, so it is basically up to the Customs officer on duty to interpret it as whatever he/ she considers as reasonable...

Pray that he doesn't recognise you from the last time when you imported a .177 OR ofcourse you face a different guy in white wherein you needn't volunteer any past info...

I had a similar experience with Delta. I confirmed online and called the lady again, and yet she did not give me any clarity. So I just went 4 hours before my flight and got things thru. Matter of fact, the person you would talk to is mostly in a call center in Bangalore :) ... and all they do is hit a 'search' query for words you ask. There is no mention of 'Airgun' or 'air gun' anywhere - resulted in zero search results for the bright call center executive ... and so the story goes
;) :)

TSA (Transport Security Administration) screens every passenger's baggage before it is placed on an airplane. There are times when TSA has to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal "master" keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. Passengers departing from the U.S. are advised to use TSA approved locks. Details of such locks are available from the website: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... locks.shtm. These locks are available at airports and travel stores

The following is from http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... ems.shtm#6

This is a complete guide to what TSA wants the passengers to do :)
For those who did not know (Now I know someone out there did not :) )

Guys -

I have a question! When you say:

"SCENARIO 2 - IMPORT AS PERSONAL BAGGAGE

Anyone returning from overseas may carry back an airgun/ air-pistol with him/ her. The following conditions would apply:

1. There is NO RESTRICTION on calibre as such using this route therefore import of .22 calibre airguns should not be a problem."

Is there an official document like a certain exim document that's on another article that specifies this point further? I say this because the last time my dad went back to India from here, he carried with him a Tech Force Premier (.22) and it got confiscated by the airport authorities in Bombay. Maybe with an official document, he can somehow get it back or maybe we can carry one with us next time we travel.

Thanks,
Amit

Airgun Import

Post by kragiesardar » Mon Jan 05, 2009 3:39 am

Will be traveling to India and was looking to give my nephew a gift. Was planning on the ShinSung (de.scription below) and the hand pump for it. Would there be any restrictions. I assume there will be customs duty that I would be glad to pay. Many thanks for your feedback.

Career 707 9mm Ultra by ShinSung

Product De.scription

Stunning hunting power from a 9mm air rifle! The Career 707 9mm Ultra is a completely different gun than the standard 707. Its awesome power takes game with amazing authority. While other air rifles can send pellets roaring downrange over 900 fps, imagine what power you'll get when you send 9mm lead pellets flying out the bore!Because the magazine permits only short pellets, we recommend that you use ONLY our 77-grain Eun Jin pellets. If you want to shoot heavier pellets and even lead pistol bullets in 9mm, buy our Fire 201S 9mm single-shot rifle. The 9mm Ultra shares some of the great features of the smallbore Career 707...a multi-shot magazine, lever-action cocking, two air reservoirs, a built-in manometer (air pressure gauge) and adjustable power levels. That's where the similarities end!The Career Ultra is a larger, heavier rifle, and the air reservoirs hold 500cc of high-pressure air. With 6-8 rounds in a clip, finishing shots are easy to deliver. You'll be able to hunt all day if you pre-load extra clips. The front sight is a hooded bead, while the rear is fully adjustable. Career rifles are known for their extreme accuracy at distances usually reserved for firearms, so mounting a high-quality scope on the 11mm rails lets you place shots exactly where you want them. The Indonesian hardwood stock is checkered and available in two styles. Stock #1 has a modest Monte Carlo butt, and the cocking lever is straight. Stock #3 has a more pronounced Monte Carlo butt, a curved cocking lever and a shaped buttpad with spacers. Stock #2 is laminated and somewhat heavier. It has a pronounced Monte Carlo stock, a shaped rubber buttpad and a curved cocking lever.A hard Plano rifle case (PL1531) is strongly suggested.

Kragiesardar,

The only airguns that have come into India are the .22s and the .177s. Airguns in .20 and .25 are a rarity. Doubt if anyone has got down a 9mm caliber airgun. You can expect trouble from the customs people. Assuming that you get it out of customs, finding pellets will be next to impossible in India. Import of pellets in .177 is being allowed. Doubt if you will be able to courier the needed pellets to your nephew once his supplies run out. IMHO you would be better off gifting him an airgun in .177 or .22. There are lots of airguns you can chose from that come in these calibers. All the best.

This airgun would not be amongst those airguns that are exempted from the provisions of the arms act. This basically means that it would require an arms license and also that it would be covered by the ban on firearms imports.

Cheers!
