Deer 2008

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share with you the decent sized buck I got this year (12/6/08). I could only take pictures of the antlers after I got them all cleaned up.


I got this in Iowa at the same place I go each year (except 2007). I got this within the first half half hour of our day, I was driving (walking) for deer and saw one doe first, then this group (three) of bucks, all about the same sized, the "one that got away" was bigger, I'm sure They were running from my right to left across our line, this one, I shot twice and hit on my third shot, hit the neck and it dropped. I must've been about 40 yards. I'd say lucky shot, then I just stepped to him, held him down by the antlers and cut the throat to let it bleed.

The rest of the day, I must've seen about 75 deer. Our second drive, most of our group maxed out. We yielded 15 deer in our second drive. One guy, Aaron, got 4 deer, 3 decent bucks (one big) and one doe. He said he'd have gotten more, he ran out of shells in his shotgun, and by the time he reloaded, the group had ran past him. Before lunch, we had netted 18 deer. The rest of the day, we got a couple more. It was a GREAT day. I was so tired that day that I chickend out and did not go the next day.

Now Iam going to draw a lot of flak, but I must speak what I strongly feel about.

The antlers would have looked better with the head .. and the animal freely grazing or trotting in the wild. Sharief ji, you could have spared us the surgical details. And yes, getting the animal on the third and that too in the neck -literally-does not call for any congratulations. Shikar is, selecting a target with great care for size, sex and other considerations and squeezing the trigger only when a clean kill is certain. Much of the joy of a shikar comes from the trailing, the closing in and from a shot well placed which may have to be repeated - so what, but well placed. Blazing away like an ack-ack in the hope of getting a hit is not hunting but killing, which one performs as a job. Some hunt for the pot and some for the trophy but what do you say about mindless killing. Unless this was a culling mission what was the need for "netting" 18.

i dont mean to to argue with you but sharief bhai didnt kill all the 18deer by himself.there might be many members in his hunting party and there are many places in the USA and canada where upto 6 or 7 tags can be purchased per person.

I do not think anyone will pick on you personally but on the content just like you did on Sharief's post.I think that's only fair. Re the animal freely walking, we have discussed a lot of times about the necessity of managing deer population in a sustainable way.Sustainable hunting is a very important aspect of conservation. I wouldn't care much for surgical details,but killing is a part of hunting and I am afraid it may not be pretty. Re the rest of the issues, Sharief is the best person to explain.

Sharief can better explain but a little research on his previous IFG posts would have shown that he is an experienced hunter and a shooter; well aware of hunters code and Iowa state hunting laws which specify deer size etc which can be hunted with shotguns and slugs only.

Yes we insist on Surgical details because all of us arm chair or couch hunters learn from the experience and narrative of those lucky enough to avail such opportunity. Regarding the antlers in the picture, I wish today I had taken picture of similar antlers at the Beretta gun room in NYC.


Imagine the reaction incase of hunting with cross bows; I personally believe its in humane but others will state it gives the quarry a fair chance makes it more even.

Communication is a challenge at best but your post in my opinion came across as very judgmental even though you are trying to provide constructive feedback.

I took this deer with my Benelli SBE and a one ounce rifled slug. I did not get the opportunity to get the show pictures with the deer and gun and head. Like I said, I could only find time/opportunity to snap the picture after I was all done.

Hunting is different for different people and there are different types of hunting and I'm sure the people taking shots at me or my writing know that and better. Like I said, we were driving for deer and that's what happens, you get/have to shoot at running animals sometimes while driving/standing on this type of hunt. That's all I'm going to say about that.

The gentlemanly restraint has not gone un-noticed. Nothing personal buddy. It’s just that the manner in which you applied the coup-de-grace made me take the side of the deer – momentarily and I missed the point that the 18 were secured by a group (Thanks Indian). We’ll be good friends when we meet, I am sure of it.

My wife cooks deer just like a beef or lamb/goat dish, maybe she does it a little different. The wild game taste does show and it is very good.

The reason for the cutaway is expense. When I have a really big one, then I may mount the whole head. For this one, I can just get a mounting kit and be done in less than $20. I hear the big ones have tougher meat though.

Goldfinger, "finishing" off the deer, doing what I did is the best method I know, plus it makes it Halal for me. Very rarely, in any kind of hunting does one get a one shot kill, we either have to wait for the animal to die slowly or finish it off in some way. Also, we had about 15 people in our group that day, we take turns standing and driving and even share tags when needed. The group I hunt with are my good friends and are landowners and they can get multiple tags for cheap ($2). They farm and the over abundance of deer does hurt their crops and back yard vegetable/fruit/flower gardens. Trust me, I've been hunting for about 7 years now and my friends for about 30, in total we have more than 500 years in combined hunting years. We also believe that we don't have to learn by our own mistakes. We start out with a safety meeting, equipment & license check. Our senior members give us all a lecture and a plan for the day. Usual safety, ethics and commonsense lecture, each year. I just wanted to say that, maybe I cashed all my grace chips
