Model 70 is back

Hi folks,

The winchester model 70 is back. The pre-64 model 70 action is considered as one of the two greatest actions (bolt) ever by many, the other is the M98 action. It is being manufactured in the FN plant in USA. I was able to grab one of the first ones that arrived in Canada. Very nice rifle with good wood, and it is CRF. It is in .270 win. If not better, at least comparable to my pre-64 30-06. I wish the 08 models had iron sights like the pre-64

Pardon my ignorance but in the absence iron sights, I assume it is drilled/ tapped or has some other provision for scope mounting right out of the box?

I quite like irons too, maybe it's just nostalgia or maybe it's how we were taught how to shoot as kids... then again maybe it's just the 'survivalist' in each one of us who wants a fall back solution - just in case!

Something like some people I know who refuse to buy 4x4's with MPFI or similar systems... "what if we have a massive EMP in the case of nuclear war?"

J/K... don't mind me...

BTW, (and going quite OT except for the Winchester connection) IIRC there was a .270 model 54 being offered in Delhi for 2+ lacs a few months back. penpusher & Sanjay were there, maybe they'd recall the exact asking price. Was a short barrelled carbine, reblued (aren't they almost always

), but asides from that and the asking price being on the higher side, was a sweet rifle...

Congratulations on a gorgeous looking rifle.Very nice. Of course,that 30/06 too. My favourite caliber.

Two questions.

1. The wood on the .270, is it original or treated wood like those on Fabarm? Looks great.

2. Any particular reason you picked .270, especially when you already have a 30/06? I have nothing against a .270. Just curious about the choice.'

Vikram,

The wood is genuine satin finished walnut. The 2008 Limited edition comes with a higher grade walnut stock, at least the first few that rolled out of the plant. It is a limited production run for the year marking the return of the Model 70.

There were only two rifles available @ the dealer in Canada when I was looking around , 1 was a .270 & the other 30-06. So I opted for the .270 since I did not have one in 270.

The .270 is based on the same 30-06 case necked down to accept .277 caliber bullets, it shoots a little flatter. Both are great calibers. I did not want to miss the opportunity to get a 2008 model.

Next year when other calibers become available I am planning to buy one in a .243 or a .22-250. The smaller calibers are much more fun to shoot @ the range.

Ever considered a 6.5X55 Swede? A great round that will take a Moose any day and bowl over any boar you will ever shoot but quite easy on the shoulder or so I am told.

Nice rifles.Off course,for us living in India,that the Model 70 has been resurrected is of academic interest only as long as the ban on the import of firearms remains.

The price quoted for the Model 54 .270 was 1.7lakhs.

Vikram - The 6.5x55 is an excellent cartridge, it is a .264 size bullet if I am not wrong, so very close to the .270. I have never shot one but it should be a nice gun to shoot all day @ the range, it would also nicely take any game suitable for a 140 grain bullet. I would prefer an old classic gun like a Carl Gustaf Swedish Mauser m94-96 etc. than one of the modern american rifles.

penpusher - I hope they lift the ban on import soon. If they are issuing licenses, it is unfair to keep the license holders from owning a good sporting rifle/shotgun.

Hope is too precious to lose. What joy is there in the life of man who has no hope, although in this case it do seem like too far from reality.

Things like the recent Mumbai attacks are not going to help either....
