.22 shot shell

Post by Shamsher » Sun Nov 23, 2008 11:00 am

Dear All,
I have heard a lot about the .22 shot shell which fires small round pellets, similar to shotgun.
I have never used or even seen them.
I request if somebody had used them, please share your views and experiences about this ammunation.

further is it freely avaliable in India, and at what price.

Looking forward to your comments.

Shamsher,
These .22 shotshells were refered to as "DUST" loads by Britishers. They were made by ICI, as well as many American Ammo Companies. Usually this .22 shell is filled with No.12 shots and generally used to shoot small house pests like Geckos and small mice from within a meter or so. It was advertised and popularized as a snake load. But if I saw a snake in the wild, I would give it a wide berth and spare it rather then get within a meter and shoot it. Doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather you used them up by tossing a coin and shoot it in the air with these dust loads from a handgun. It'll surely impress friends. I did that.

These .22 RF shotshells are still loaded, though not widely distributed. There main use would be for short-range pest control, and collecting small birds for scientific collections. They don't pattern well from a rifled barrel, but do pretty well from a smooth bore. I had pretty good succes with them on sparrow to starling size birds at up ten meters, or so. But I'd be lucky to score on one out three sparrows at that range, because of the poor pattern. At five meters they easily penetrated half an inch of soft wood, not something to shoot inside the house, unless you want to patch holes in the plaster! Cheers.

Hey Shamsher,

As it turns out I had several packs of CCI shot shells but in .22WMR some years back. Had no use for them nor did anyone I knew. (Basically no one had .22magnum chambered guns here)

Finally a cop friend got a colt pistol in .22WMR (midget 1911)...for lack of better ammo, I gifted it to him :D

Never heard of it since.

they are basically used on squirrels and snakes at short distances.some people also call them as snake shot and i think the 22mag shotshells are more effective :)

.22 shotshells are used for killing small pests like rats or snakes.

On appearance it will look like shots enclosed in a plastic capsule half.

Usually no 6 or no 9 shot are filled.( loaded in it ) I do not remember how many grams or grains. About 3 grams I estimate.

Almost all .22 LR ammunition makers offer this.

Accurate to about 15 / 20 yards.

I have a few... its novelty ammo.
Not worth the money even here in Europe.
The pattern is way to quick spreading and in .22 not worth it.

Please resize the picture to 640x480 and repost.

I will take some more pics if you want over the weekend.
