Stupidity

Post by penpusher » Tue Nov 18, 2008 7:59 pm

Talked to a fellow who had advertised a Belgian made copy of the S&W hinged frame DA revolver in what is probably .44 Russian.Claimed that he has been firing .44 Special in it and now that he is out of .44 Special ammo. he is using 44-40 cartridges.

He is lucky to be alive if what he claims he has been doing, is possible in the first place.Wants 10lakhs for it.

Hi SSS: I agree. Something's not quite right with what this chap is telling you. The bullet diameter/length of cartridge of the rounds in question are -

10.8/33.3 - 44-40 *
10.9/24.64- .44 Russian
10.9/29.46 - .44 Special
10.9/32.77 - .44 Magnum (for comparison)

The 44-40 seems to skinny and too long to fit in with the others (it's too long even for a .44 Magnum revolver). Even if he can, he'll destroy the rifling and his face.

If, it is a .44 S&W Russian revolver, then the .44 Special ammo has too much pressure to be safe in it

The bullet and cartridge measurements above are in mm.

Ashok: Pressure is the same for the .44 Russian and .44 Special. If the revolver chambers are bored straight through, and the cylinder is long enough, this would be perfectly safe. The .44-40 WCF cartridge, however, has a considerably larger diameter case. Can't imagine how they could fit into a .44 Russian chamber, unless you hammer them in. Cheers.

Thanks TwoRivers. Didn't know that the .44 Russian and the .44 Special generated the same pressure. Maybe he "was" hammering them in :)
