People in South Africa prefer .40 as standard choice for SD. Glocks has major share in the market. Although there is no restriction to own 9mm (p), yet the capability of .40 mm to make bigger hole in the target and deep penetration through the windscreens of the cars makes them first choice among the shooters. The .40 ammunition is although costlier than 9mm (P) yet is widly available. Those who are experience prefer reloding for target practice and stand ammunition for SD purpose. Does this .40 cal available in india. Remember, South Africa has bad name for Law and Order situation.

Govt. bought many a glocks and handed them to special forces, army and some police departments in India. There was an incident last year when someone robbed two delhi policemen of their new glocks at gun point.I dun believe .40 cal is available in India ( though it is NPB).

amk: The .40 S&W is not just a milder loading of the 10 mm; though it evolved out of a milder loading of that cartridge, when the 10 mm proved too much of a cartridge for many FBI agents. You might say that it is the .38 Special/.357 Magnum story in reverse. It has a shorter case, using small primers. Cheers.

You did. Except for the important "shorter case". Without that, those who don't know might think the two interchangeable. And since the .40 will go into a 10 mm chamber, that could lead to an unpleasant surprise. Cheers.

Ahhh, I mentioned smaller cart, not shorter case. I didn't realise anyone would be crazy enough to chamber and fire a 10mm in a .40 gun.

You'd be surprised what some people will stuff into the chambers of their guns; even when availability of ammo is not a problem. And when ammo is hard to find, it becomes even more likely, as some questions on this forum seem to indicate. If there is a way to screw something up, some one out there is sure to find it. Sometimes it's done out of idle curiosity "I just wanted to see what would happen", sometimes it done out of need, and sometimes it's just an unfortunate mix-up. But it happens more often than one might think. Cheers.

Have Glocks in 9, 40 and 10MM. The 40 was created as the 10MM was causing stress fractures in most handguns and a 40 can be used in a 9 mm envelope. I prefer the 10mm, ammo is getting expensive, 40 is more readily available. Will see if I get time to take photographs this weekend. The Glocks have no issues with the 10 MM. Supposedly the 10 MM was created as the FBI wanted a round that could penetrate engine blocks thereby disabling cars. Hard to separate fact from fiction on some of these but the 10mm sure is snappy when fired.
