Bluing Help
I have and old S*S made by Charles Hellis And Sons, London. It is a short and light gun with 26 inc. barrels. Its about 80 years old and is from my great grand father. It had caught some rust near the end of the barrels during the life of my grand father as it was neglected as he had a prolonged illness. When the rust was rubbed with a rust rubber and WD40 the bluing had come off. I wanted to get it reblued. I wanted to know which are the different types of bluing available and would not damage the gun in any way. One of my uncles had said that bluing it would loosen the barrel parts and i should not blue it but keep it well oiled. There is no rust or damage on the inside of the barrel. Is it also safe to fire ballshot ammo from the same gun?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Bluing Help
I would have thought that someone with the handle 'browning' would know something about the rust blueing process known in India as 'browning'
Anyway you could tryout some of the cold blue chemicals on the 'forsale' section of the forum and the wouldnt harm the gun.

Re: Bluing Help
So-called hot blue will dissolve the lead solder used to solder the barrels and ribs; so only old-fashioned rust-bluing, or a wipe-on cold blue should be used on a double, especially an older one, as they always were soft-soldered. Can't tell you what a gunsmith would be using in India. Cheers.

Browning,
Try Van's Gun Blue, its much more effective and enters the metal pores and stays put unlike other cold blues.
