Khukris Wanted

Gentlemen,

Is someone aware of somebody in India who deal in Khukris and can ship to bangalore. I am intrested in buying one. After seeing Mack The Knife's Service no 1. Khukri, I would like to know if someone deals in India with them. Ofcourse done my share of googling where I found many guys shipping it from Nepal, but our customs??

Ranjeet,

There is a company in Rajasthan that makes them but the damn name eludes me at the moment. The other option is to have a friend or relative going to Darjeeling to get you a few.

Quality may not be up there with the Himalayan Imports (should have been Exports) stuff but they are good enough for general camp use. Just make sure they are kept oiled or greased as they tend to rust fast.

Customs is a problem. I had ordered two (the second was a 21" Sirupati for a friend in England) and had to wait something like 18 to 24 months before getting them. Finally had no choice but to ask a high ranking Indian in Nepal to bring them over.

Local blacksmiths make khukris here in Mizoram too but they are more of a user oriented (utility) type and not too beautiful. A Mizo made khukri with scabbard is about Rs. 500 - 600.

Traditionally we used to have a samurai type of sword which has now been shortened to about a foot and a half. It has been adapted for farm use and is not at all beautiful.
Will see if I can get some pics.

Well thanks Mack The Knife, I have a couple of Khukris myself, Had been lucky enough to visit Gangtok, that was when I was in Calcutta for a couple of years.
I am really looking forward to have a couple more, better khukris - really from Nepal.

How is the the customs on bringing one in baggage from Nepal or anywhere? does it need to be blunt or something...

Can get someone order in Germany and bring it back as baggage, or do you perceive some major risks ?

Hey Jonah,
Are you taking about the dao or the da that we find in Assam and Arunachal? I think that is really worth having for camp work. Nice in heft and very reassuring in a forest.

The problem is with Indian customs. I believe any blade over 9"x2" cannot be imported. However, I have a feeling the customs would permit you to bring back a Khukuri or two from Nepal as it is a popular souvenier. Getting it via post carries a far greater risk of confiscation.

Also I seem to have goofed up on the price of the Khukris they are all above Rs. 1500/- Bowies with 8" Blades are for about Rs.700-Rs.900

Jonah, thanks for the pics.

Can you tell me what the spine thickness was on both the bowie and khukuri and whether the handles are wood or buffalo horn.

I suppose they were made from spring steel and forged rather than machined?

If I wish to buy them could you buy and post on my behalf? Would like them made by the best craftsmen you know off rather than just the touristy one's.

Do you have pics of the scabbards?

Also interested in that traditional Mizo knife you mentioned earlier.

Afraid not, Ranjeet. Gifted away the other khuks but this one gets handed down to one of the two boys.

Mack The Knife the Bowie is 5mm and the Khukri is a little thinner at almost 4mm. Both have wooden handle and scabbards. These are 100% Handforged from Maruti leaf springs (The Blacksmith swears by it as the best steel for knives) one can custom order the handles and scabbards at a little extra cost. I dont know about the sending part but if the post office can take them I guess so.
Otherwise I am planning on a trip to south India before Christmas and might get a chance to visit B'lore too.

Jonah,

I was looking at a substantially thicker spine (my khuk is 11.something mm) on the bowie because I plan to use it as a chopper rather than a fighting knife.

If he can cusomise more than just the scabbard and handle, then this is what I would like:

1) 10" long blade.

2) 6 to 7 mm thick and tapered only when it is 2" to 3" from the point. I want a strong point rather than a needle like point.

3) Full tang. Preferably tapered but not necessarily so.

4) Would like the end of the tang to go past the handle by 3 to 4 mm and cover the back - basically to act as a pommel that could be used to hammer things if need be.

5) A lanyard hole to be provided at the back running a hollow steel or brass rod through the scales and tang. ID to be 5 mm

6) Loose the choil if it is of no religious significance to him.

If he is not willing to do the above, then I will go with the stock option.

Could you post a close-up of the handle and a pic of the scabbard.

Any idea what wood is being used for the handle?

Postage within India is not a problem.
