Aiming high to arm themselves

The Civilian Rifle Training Course (CRTC) is aiming high. Nearly 72 civilians including six women are sweating it out at the ongoing maiden Civilian Rifle Training Course at the City Armed Reserve (North) grounds.

The Police department has made it mandatory for civilians to undergo training before obtaining a revolver license for self defence. This has resulted in a keen interest from the public and the local police stations find it difficult to handle the mad rush.

However, those who are already in possession of a license and revolver will not be harassed to under go training at the time of renewal.

Before sunrise, aspirants from different occupations, irrespective of age, all dressed in white attire assemble for the morning parade. After a brief morning workout, they get the feel of the police training and then to the nuances of arms and ammunition, both theory and practical.

Muralidhar, a lecturer at a private college in Bangalore was eager to share his enthusiasm with Deccan Herald, “Hold, Aim, Trigger. We are having a rollicking time. It is not a joke to attend this camp. Our respect for the Police department has grown by leaps and bounds.”

Hamsaveni, who runs a Security and Facility Management echoed the sentiment: “With thousands of people working in my firm and in a profession where we get lots of threats, I'm bound to carry a revolver for my self defence. It's a wise move to have a short training session before we pick up a revolver and license. Now we have hands-on knowledge about the arms and ammunition and can carry a weapon confidently.”

Shankar M Bidari, Bangalore City Police Commissioner told this paper: “Proper use of the revolver will prevent many unwanted happenings. Those who are already in possession of the revolvers need not undergo training at the time of renewal of the license as we presume that they will be well versed in using the revolver. But fresh applicants should undergo training before getting the revolver.”

Though realtors and land developers outnumbered the aspiring lot, police officials working in non-executive departments, politicians, lecturers and senior citizens are also showing keen interest in handling the weapons and are bang on target.

Even the KSRA has been bombarded by applications for the CRT (civilian rifle training) which is being given...

What caught my attention was:

At least he realizes the truth... unlike our babus!!

So can I take this training? Or only those are eligible who are applying for a small arm license?

From the article, it looks like its for people applying for hand arms.. but we should find out more about this.. KSRA also has a similar course which is mandatory for membership.

Right there diskaon

You will have to undergo the CRT (Civilian Rifle Training) for either of the following reasons:
1. Applying for an arms permit
2. Wanting to become a member of KSRA

You can also take up the CRT alone... without the above two motives..

Thats a great initiative. Its better to know what to have more knowledge about the firearms before you handle than hit and trial which can cause tragedies too. People learn the responsibilities and safe handling of firearms. It wouldn't be a bad idea if this is made compulsory everywhere

.. and guess who came up with that idea

Matter of fact, one disadvantage that I noticed is that the relative knowledge that one can gain from the course is more of shooting safety and aiming; very little of the variety of guns and their differences. To counter this, I have planned to make some posters of common variety of guns and such information (Basic difference between rifle/revolver/pistol, types of ammo), including downloaded and printed catalogs/info-booklets of the more common guns in the market. That way, someone who undergoes the CRT course will have 'some' bit of knowledge of what guns are also. Presently, I dont have enough time and a printer access; and I have to drive the idea into the 'coach' first

The reasons and motives behind that is a book by itself...

What I would really like to see is this talk translated into easier, smoother, faster licensing for applicants... lets see how many more licenses they end up issuing, like they say - the proof of the pudding is in the eating!

I for one am not holding my breath...

For easier, smoother, faster licensing , the first thing needed is the educating of all the officers responsible for issuing licenses about gun laws and firearms. Most of them don't know much about them and generally go with general prevailing convictions. Now i have no idea how one can educate them when most of them are generally high headed and unfortunately this is the irony of the situtation.

Hi All!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all fellow IFGians for their support and well wishes for I have just acquired my revolver/pistol license after a long wait of one year.

I have gone through the CRT both, through the Police Department and KSRA (only out of my interest since only either of the two is what is mandatory). Also booked for a pistol at GSF and now waiting to see what happens next.

Would like to thank you all again and especially this web-site itself for giving me the strength to carry on in acheiving my goal (as I had almost lost it) and most importantly helping me not to loose my patience while going through this cumbersome and also which I felt was a never ending process (I now remember the time I have spent on this web-site every day which kept on encouraging me).
