Which is your Favourite Hunting Dog/ Gun Dog

Dear all,
Since immortal times probably before the advent of bow and arrows men have used dogs as his companions in the hunts. These dogs generally belong to the "Working Group" or the "Gun Dogs". In our country to very beautiful examples of indeginious breeds which are world renouned are the Rampur Hound and the Rajapallam. But alas not many specimens of these beautiful breed are still left. I would like you all to share
Which is your favourite companion amongst these A) gun dogs B) hunting dogs?
Whcih is your favourite breed overall?
What breed of dog you presently own?
Any memorable incident involving these true companions?
Have a great time remembering all the remarkable incidents

I guess everyone's views would be biased by the breeds of dogs they have owned/ known - mine certainly are and I make no bones about it.

Hmmm favourite anecdote... well there's one that dates back to childhood, when gun dogs were actually used as such (in India). In those days we used to have a pointer (called Moti) in the village and on one particular visit (in the winters) we'd done an early morning shoot (my uncles, their friends, my cousins and me).

That same afternoon I decided to try out Moti's hunting prowess on my own and went down to the village pond with him, where a few ducks were swimming. On reaching the edge of the pond (jodh in village parlance) I told him to go get one - I was much too young to be allowed independent access to firearms so this seemed like a reasonable alternative form of duck hunting...

Anyhow, in he dived and kept at the ducks for a good 45 minutes till he finally got them tired. For an inexplicable reason the ducks refused to fly away (more on that later) and in stead kept swimming away from him. In the end, once fatigue set in and they couldn't swim as fast, he got a duck and brought it back to me (unharmed). Victory!!

However, this victory was short lived! When I proudly went back home and displayed my trophy to my (eldest) uncle, he gave me a smart cuff on my ear and told me, "You fool, what have you done?! That's one of my pet ducks!"

favourite companion among gundog are doberman, Weimaraner , retrivers for hunting.

favourite breed overall is doberman

breed i presently own is GSD. nine of them

and searching for bull terrier

A small correction.........dobermanns do not come under the gundog group. They come under the working group. Dobermanns are my favorite too. Own two of them with a gsd.

GSD is my fav too... have two of them...

Never hunted with them, but both love to swim. I take off to one of the several ponds close by, and they have their day of fun. I usually throw a half filled water bottle and they swim and retrieve it. Of course, the male, Simba wakes me up everyday with the newspaper in his mouth; takes my empty coffee mugs to the kitchen, and sometimes picks up plastic waste and drops them close to the waste paper basket

The lady, Honey is an extremely sensitive dog. She can smell well and very well. She will retrieve a small stone from a pile by smelling my scent on it. Although my wife had 16 dogs in her lifetime, she vouches that these two are par excellence.

The best of their antics that I really adore is when I have visitors staying for a week or longer, with kids. They somehow develop a closeness to the kids, and accompany them where ever they go. One on either side; and will simply let no stranger get close to the kid. They become more ferocious than usual if someone approaches; will smell and 'verify' everything the kid touches, and will even leave food if they feel they have to go along with the kid - but I call them when they are eating, they look at me and wag their tails, but make no effort to come

Anyways, I am sure every dog lover will vouch on their behaviors with their masters, and I am sure everyone with a dog is as happy as I am

I have always been a dog lover...it's in the genes actually...My favourite gundog is the Beagle it's a very quick, cute and intelligent breed. Very good trackers. I at present own three Tibetan Mastiffs, a Rottweiler n a GSD...havent ever taken any on a hunt. I have seen Balto n Zalim(both TMs) pounce on pigeons in the lawn in the early hours of the day.
Two of my dogs Laila(TM) n Pluto(GSD) are very sensitive, they wont eat for the whole day if scolded at.
The Rottweiler is my grandad's dog and is not that friendly with me or my mastiffs, the GSD also lives with grandad in my village but I've know him since I was 11.
The TMs live with me and are 9mnths old but are taller than the Rott and will outgrow the GSD in some months.
Zalim has a bad temper and some times growls at the servant or the maid, once even tore off the shirt sleeve of the trainer. But doesnt react if even scolded by me or any person of the family.

Since we are in the topic.. an old lady, who is my friend's grandmother passed away and left behind a Labrador. If someone is willing to adopt, please let me know (Bangalore). The friend stays in a busy commercial area flat, and would want to give it to someone who knows and wants dogs. I tried, but my two doggies just would not go along...

Well guys,
Think it is my topic and after reading all your interesting posts I could not resist the temptation of penning my experience.
I started my first experience with a dog when I gifted a Old English Sheepdog was well below 3 years (as told by my parents) and since them never spent a day without them (except of course for my trips outside my hometown).

Well my favourite hunting dog is the Great Dane (famous for hunting wild boars) and of course the Rhodesian Ridge Back. Though I never owned one myself but have heard about theit legendary dedication and courage.

My favourite gun dogs are undoubtedly LAbradors and followed by Golden Retriever as I have found these two breeds to be naturally inclined to retrieve and easy to train. But it may be my personal affiliation that the Labradors are better workers in the highlands than the Golden Retrievers. Had quite a few of them but till date never could complaint about any of them. But in the "Heat Season" the labs get wayward and whoever kept them must know what I mean.

My favourite all time breed however happens to be the Greatdane, whom I consider the Emporors of Dogs. However I have promised myself never to keep them any longer as they have a short life (as with all big dogs) and whenever they leave you leave behind a void in your life.

Presently I own a Boxer and a Queens Pomerian. Will post their pictures pretty soon.

In the meantime please post your experiences.
