Shot Gun Engraving

Hello to all IFG members,
From the past few weak I have been searching hard to find any clue about any gun engraving job being done in India, but to my utter surprise I couldn't find even a single clue about any such job being carried out in India. But was flattered to see the kind of engraving being done in USA and Europe . Well I really feel disappointed some time when I see such a variety of wonderful weapons available all over the world but we cannot buy any of these even with all valid licenses and money to buy them. There is no alternate except to buy those Indian made crude weapons or spend fortunes on old used imported weapons . Is there any out there who can do justice to gun lovers like us. well I cant see anybody as far as I can see . Well let me hold my emotions and come back to the real world and again ask that is there anybody you people know who can do genuine carving on the shotguns, so that I can satisfy my inner feeling to some extent and feel somewhat satisfied by getting some external modification on my so called Indian made DBBL shotgun.But I will appreciate to hear from someone who might have come out with an innovative idea of procuring imported weapon here in India itself. Dear Grewal,
There are a couple of people who do acid etching, this is a very crude form of etching.

I have not heard of anyone who could do the engraving in India. Although i knew a guy who did the job right.

Another person i know. engraves very finely on pure silver. takes days to complete & the results are very good. However he refused to take on steel as it is too hard.

You should however change over to a fine imported DBBL with some engraving. It would give you some satisfaction though.

I shall PM you the address of the etcher in a couple of days, been long since i heard from him.

I havehad some engraving done on silver and gold. If you want to give it a try, here is what you could do. Remove the parts that needs to be etched. Download/create a design and take a print out on paper. Go down to the jewelery/gold-shop lane in your city. Ask around for engravers. You will find them usually sitting outside shops with small machines .. something like the 'dabba' watch repairers. Talk to them, and see if it can be done. Offered the right talk and price, I dont see a reason why they would wont do.

Prabhdeep,

Getting etching/engraving done on the chamber of an indian made DBBL is not a good idea. Extensive engraving might result in compromising the strength of the metal and thus the chamber. Remember that the chamber and barrels are tested at the IOF before the final finishing touch is given to the DBBL/SBBL. Any further external modification to the chamber in the form of engraving/etching might weaken it.
Now having said that, the person who might answer your query is a senior member here . His name is art-collector. Some time back he did post a few pictures of an indian DBBL which was engraved after factory testing. The engraving was nicely done .

The cheapest option maybe to look for some factory/ business with Laser etching/ engraving machinery. It's not the same thing but properly done does give beautiful results at the fraction of the cost of hand engraving. I believe a few of the more budget priced European makes are using this method to produce some very pretty looking shotguns...

I also wanted to beautify a modern's O/U...a friend gave me the idea to measure the reciever of the gun, take thin silver plates of the same dimension, get them engraved at a jeweler and stick em to your gun, you can also take brass plates and get them chromed after getting them engraved.
I got my gun's reciever chromed.

Indeed its a workable idea. My question is , how will you stick silver plate ( presumably thin) to the gun metal/steel ? Gas welding? I dont know if it is possible. Brass might behave differently though. If and when you get it done please post a few pictures.

the best way out is to acid etch the design & then guild it with gold or silver sheet.

One way to stick the plates is by using strong silicon adhesive. Silicon because the recoil and heat generated while firing will not affect the artwork. I did not have enough time so, I just got my gun's reciever chromed, will upload the pic as soon I learn how to get the HTML code of the image.

Dhillon,
If you are using something like Photobucket, they will provide you the required link right below the image. It will be mentioned as 'Image code' or something similar.
Another option is to 'embed' the link of the image within [PIC] and [/PIC] code. Hope I could help
