Welcome to board.
Keep in mind the function of a pistol is to allow you fight your way to your rifle.
Secondly a 12 ga is probably the best close in suppression weapon, short of a flame thrower with the correct ammunition.
As for local laws check some of the other forums like snipershide, and locally regarding the applicability of the Castle Law in MD. From what little I know MD is fairly restrictive.
