It's true mate, old muzzle loaders still work on big murrels, pellets must be in limited numbers otherwise PASTE" as quoted by OUP.

Bows & crossbows require no license.

OUP even a powerful calibre (like the 30-06) will loose most of its energy on hitting water. I don't recall the exact distances but I think they completely loose their effectiveness within as little as 4-5 feet or so... will try and see if I can dig out details on real life studies conducted...

Have never tried it, but heard quite a few stories from people who have used the .315 for "fishing"...

The next gun up was the M1, which shoots at 2800 ft/s. In their Bulletproof Glass mythbusting, the M1 was capable of penetrating 2.5" of bulletproof glass.

* M1@ 10 ft: tiny bullet fragments once again
* M1@ 2 ft: the bullet only pierced the gel 4", which would be enough to just pierce the skin.

They finally broke out the big gun, the .50 cal with armor-piercing rounds, which are shot at 3000 ft/s.

* .50 cal @ 10 ft: even though the water exploded, the ballistics gel was intact. Water made it all the way up to the ceiling. As it was with the previous guns, the bullet round came apart on impact. confirmed: you can protect yourself from a bullet by diving underwater. If the shooter were directly overhead, you would probably be safe from most guns at 8 ft. At a 30 degree angle, you would only have to be 3 ft underwater to be safe.

Shooting at water with a firearm is a really dangerous practice. Hit the right angle and the slug will skip off the water like a stone and will be lethal for many hundred yards.
