See hunting does not mean that the person does not love animals. I love animals, they are very tasty
Well RottLord does your initial statement vent out your true feelings or are you just stirring up a hornets nest to have fun. Either way we are
And believe me there are meaner things done by people and hunting surely is not one of them.
Like one above (not god - one of the posts above) state that its each ones view.

Is fishing for pleasure "mean" too?
How about using deodorant, or washing with anti-bacterial soap? Those products are both made for the purpose of killing, or are you being arbitrary again and saying it is OK to kill some things "for pleasure" but not others?

Hey Rottlord mate,
You've livened up things by the looks of it . Lets face it, there will always be two sides to a coin and folks will stick to their side come hell or high water. In this neck of the woods, you seem to be on a side that doesn't have many acolytes. So, let us be and we'll let you be.
What the heck, Live and Let live is what you're preaching in a way, Right Buddy ? So Live and let us Live and we go our own separate ways bud.
regards

RottLord ,
You say hunting is ok if its for food...........
From this can i draw an inference and say that as per you its ok to hunt as long as whatever is hunted is eaten...........Heh Heh , in which case you are also on the same side as all of us , its just that you don't know it !!!
Cheers Rohit.

Re: Hunting is the meanest action by humans!
Here is an excerpt from Dictionary.com:
American Heritage Dictionary
(hŭnt) Pronunciation Key
v. hunt·ed, hunt·ing, hunts
v. tr.
To pursue (game) for food or sport.
To search through (an area) for prey: hunted the ridges.
To make use of (hounds, for example) in pursuing game.
To pursue intensively so as to capture or kill: hunted down the escaped convict.
To seek out; search for.
To drive out forcibly, especially by harassing; chase away: hunted the newcomers out of town.
--------------
As per this, I would like to bring everyone into the same page.
Firstly, killing mosquitoes, lizards and rodents, which are more of pests may not be called hunting. So, shall we leave out the 'anit-bacterial' bath, etc from this topic.
We go out to hunt, but what is already on us or in our kitchen may not be hunting.
Now, considering the actual meaning of 'Hunting', it boils down to humans pursueing/killing/capturing animals (mostly wild) thru means of weaponry, etc. This should be the disclaimer to let everyone discuss on the same page.
(It would be amazing if we did hunt without weaponry)
Next, considering the fact that most people think that the true spirit of hunting lies in 'eating' what you hunt, I would be sorry for the bad gun who shot a tree. Imagine the poor fellow chewing bark!
Everything has its limits, and as long as the basic eco-system is not being damaged, hunting may seem OK for many. Eitherway, hunters are so far better than poachers, who actually dont care much for the eco-system or in preserving or contributing to wild life. Every forest has one too many of a species, and maybe (A BIG maybe) removing a few thru legal hunting would not hurt so much. Having said this, hunting is probably the only sport wherein a loss of a life is in line. This may seem alarming for those who view hunting as a game (in its actual sense), especially since the opposition team is not an entry to compete. This view seems like the basic building stone for many arguments. But until the arguments are had and heard, there can only be misunderstanding...

Sir Rottlord,
Doe you wear leather shoes?? leather belts?? I guess so. I have seen buffaloes being butchered in front of my eyes.. I dont use leather after that.
As far as hunting is concerned- you are right from you... but is it mean or cruel thats for individuals to decide.
i have never hunted. but have done fishing.. is that mean too....
bye for now and happy leather using!!

Friends,
I am a hunter and will be allways!
Some may say that hunting is a one way sport as the other side does not know the rules.
It is hard to agree to this, as a hunter who after spending hours and days planning & tracking the quarry in a still hunt, either missing the shot when it is in sight or when quarry bolting or flying away just before the shot is to be taken, I have wondered many times whether the quarry or we are the victims!
To me hunting is like taking alcohol. The person who takes it must think about the consequences of afterwards and his health, social status etc, when he starts.
There is the similar responsibility in a hunter too! As he loves hunting, he has to plan and try for the species survival.
I used to visit the places where we used to hunt though I donot now, I tried to convince the villagers regarding moderating the hunting activities.
They are poor and are willing to participate in beats etc just to get a share of meat. When I met one of the villagers recently at Bangalore, he told me that the villagers have discouraged the poachers and for the last one year there were no poachers. I was very glad to hear that.
Hope, some of you share my above opinion on hunting.
Thanks and cheers.

I read a book containing the memoirs of the chief gamekeeper of the earstwhile Mewar state (udaipur).
In the first chapter, he lists the virtues of shikar.
I shall try to list them from memory.
Note these qualities have nothing to do with hunting for food/trophy.
1 self confidence.
2 "nirbhay" = fearless
3 "bhookh-proof, pyaas-proof, nindra-proof, garmi-proof, sardi-proof, barsaat proof"= one becomes immune/ learns to tolerate to hunger, thirst, rain, heat, cold, sleep.
4 travelling, seeing new places.
5 meet knowledgable sages meditating in the forest.
6 appreciate the beauty of the nature.
7 become a good rider.
8 think quickly
9 lern to talk to/ touch/ break bread with people of all castes/ class/ religion.
These are the points that i can recall at the moment although a whole chapter ws dedicated to this subject.
One can appreciate that this book was written in the early 1900's and esp point no. 9 is a great credit to shikaris.
there are loads of other qualities i have learnt from shikar/fishing.
patience
respect for quarry.
conservation.
keeping mum.
heightened sense of alertness.
cooking
discipline
respect for nature
early to bed; early to rise
overcoming greed
sharing
teamwork
keeping ones anger in check
realising that with greater (fire)power comes greater responsibilities
One a lighter note, the lessons served me well in my college years over the following common scenerios in a youngsters life:
1 how to pull:
first decide on the quarry.
then the habitat, then try to find out as much as possible about the quarry's habits, then observe the quarry in its habitat without being too concious, wait for the right moment, then try to bait/ attract the quarry, when the quarry gets used to the bait, then shoot.
2 getting over a nasty break up.
There are many fish in the lake. If one gets away, dont go back home sulking. Cast the bait, and wait for another one to bite.
3 not being disheartened when unable to 'pull' at a party.
Remember the thrill is in the chase, not the kill. Else everyone would be shooting caged animals. As long as the chase/ stalk is exiting, it doesnt matter if one is unable to bag the trophy.
4 never make your quarry suffer due to a badly aimed/timed shot. It hurts a lot. Only shoot when one is almost certain of a hit.
5 avoiding fights: sher doesnt to prove it is a sher by fighting. Lets the dogs bark.
other benefits:
being in the forest from an early age
bolsters ones immunity.
Tell me one 'sport' that teaches you all this at an early age.
In fact hunting is one hobby/sport which doesnt make you attached to money.
see any footballer/cricketer/golfer etc etc. The more they advance in their respective fields, the more richer they get ang they have more 'bling'/ flasier lifestyles.
Look at shikaris. the more serious they get about it, the more professional, the less flashier/ simpler lifestyles they have.
you have civilization today because man evolved in hunting.
speech developed due to fishing.
man became a social animal due to hunting.
Fire was used to cook game meat (not fruits).
Having said all this a shikari will still have enough humility to accept that animals are more noble, sincere, loyal, magnanimous than humans.
