The reason dachunds were said to be yappy was that there was news in the paper a week ago where in it was stated that among dogs that were likely to bite these figured in the top. rottweilers were stated to be quite docile and the best dogs were retriever and labs.

Hey thanks a ton guys...
but i'm still kind of unsure if a Lab would be the best companion..
would my mom be able to handle him/her... would my mom be able to control him/her in case he/she gets violent or something???
Perazzi would having a Fox Terrier be too tough for my mother to handle???

Sid,

Trust me when I am telling you this, fox terreirs are awesome dogs but you need to channelise their energy. They are hyper and need that much more to keep them occupied. I have had dogs for long and participated in shows. Won pretty decently with my dogs. Have had Irish setters, labs, gsds, bassets and dobermanns. Personal favorite is a dobermann. Awesome dogs to own and maintain. You just need to pick up the right pup from the right place.

had a dobermann, he was my first dog and the best there ever could be but he was too powerful for my mother to handle... i was looking more towards someone who wouldnt pull my mother too much.. the way the dobermann use to pull the leash when on the walk my mother would very well be dragged over a few feet before the dobermann would even realise...:(

Take a look at (miniature) Schnauzers. My daughter has a pair, and if I were looking for a smallish house/yard dog, that's what I would pick. Wouldn't have to worry about rats. either. And no shedding. Labs, and there are two types, can be incredibly energetic and restless, shed a lot; and that ever whipping flail (tail) is painful and destructive. For a big dog, have never come across anything a loving and sweet as my "Great Labenese", yet daunting enough to make bad guys think twice. Cheers.

German Shepard's are again a very sweet dog who when required can be a ferocious chap....
my cousin has got one and no matter what my little niece does that chap doesn't mind a thing.. i've actually seen it. the poor chap opened his mouth to yawn and my niece put her hand inside his mouth, he started whining trying to get her hand out from mouth (pushing with his tongue) but didn't close his mouth till she had her hand out.....

Commendable i must say, i almost ran to pull her hand but was told that she does that pretty often and he wouldn't do a thing.. felt bad for the poor chap.. even if she pulls his ear or sits on him while he's asleep, he doesn't do a thing and someone unknown dares to walk near her or tries to pick her up when no immediate family member is around...... he's in for some serious trouble

But the question still remains Lab or a Smooth Fox terrier or ????

Cheers
Siddharth

Since we're on the topic of dogs, here's a new addition to the family :-)

We've named him Hugo and he's a litlle rottweiler.

Bops ,

Hugo sure looks like a real sweetheart. Dogs surely are man's best friends.

Cheers Rohit.

Thanks Sid, he's got plenty of place to exercise on the coffee estate in Coorg, just hoping he stays away from the snakes :-(
