Return of the Kanwariya
It's that time of the year again.....the "Shiv Bhakt Kanwariyas" are back on Delhi roads.
I was stuck in a traffic jam last evening for about 45 minutes....at you won't believe it, the DND flyway byepass road to Ashram Chowk. There were cars and bikes lined up for nearly 2 odd km, moving at a snail's pace becuase there were three different groups of 4-5 kanwariyas moving slam bang in the middle of the road with their huge "kanwars" carrying holy water. Finally when I did get around to getting out of the jam, one of them who was carrying a....surprise surprise...Baseball Bat brushed against my car. Obviously being in a car and being a supposed atheist (as I was disturbing a supposedly devout man in his quest for spiritual glory) I was at fault. That guy smashed my turn indicator with his Bat as retaliation. I was with my dad and got off to give him some lessons in decency but I was surrounded by nearly 15 of these guys...screaming, abusing and generally ready to beat me to a pulp (I'm not tall or well built...so probably that gave them encouragement). Anyways, to cut a long story short, some sensible people around us intervened and ended the fight....and I got saved of getting the beating of my life.
How can we as a civilized society let anybody tear apart our culture and infrastructure in the name of religion...be it Hindu or Muslim or Sikh????
The damn highway from Delhi to Haridwar is closed to traffic for almost 20 days, half the main roads in Delhi are jammed with "Kanwar" traffic, most of the major intersections are blocked by rest spots for these people....and honest, hard working citizens are bearing the brunt of this hi-jacking of our city!
I consider myself to be an Indian and an honest one at that....highly tolerant of all religions and beliefs. But I simply do not and will not accept this kind of Gunda-gardi in the name of religion!

Akshat - I totally agree with you but at times like this its best to back off as these guys who act tough are just cowards bolstered up wth dutch courage spurred on by the mob nd mob mentality.
I bet "the tough guys wth the BB bat" wud not have had the guts had he been alone wth you so take heart nd dont let it upset you.
Cheers Rohit.

Hi,
Totally agree with you and feel that these guys are scum...earlier I thought they were very good guys till I learnt about all that goes on in the name of religion. What I don't understand is why can't these apes be made to bypass the city? How come Delhi is the center of their village or the Ganges?

They don't bypass Delhi or other populated areas because "the devout" dole out free food and refreshments to these Neanderthals along the way... The UP govt. tried to give them an alternate route bypassing one of the main highways, but they never used it as it completely bypassed all towns all the way up to Khatauli.dev";p="48392 wrote:What I don't understand is why can't these apes be made to bypass the city? Usually these chaps are idle youth from villages in the surrounding areas who have nothing better to do, so they get together to go on "an adventure" - free food, people sometimes even touching their feet for blessings.... besides of course the fact that they get to bully all and sundry along the way.... for them it's nothing less than a party...
I'd advise you to give them a wide berth, not worth the aggravation IMHO...
Cheers!

Major tiff between some motorists and Kanwariyas at a traffic light delayed my journey back home by about an hour and a half.
A Kanwariya jumped a red light at an intersection along with four others on two bikes in tow(needless to say, they werent wearing helmets ). Brushed a car and down they went, instead of backing off they started a fight and even broke off a rear view mirror.
Fortunately there werent many kanwariyas around (at that moment) and when other motorists started ganging up on em', thats when the two cops posted at the intersection decided to intervene and broke it up.Goes to show that you cant push folks around for too long no matter what.
regards

Kanwar update::
This evening I was again at the traffic signal before CTC Plaza, Kilokri, listening to that crazy Rj Abhish on 95 FM and basically enjoying my drive. Since that signal has been shit down now, nobody stops there anymore. Anyways, I'm driving down at a decent 60kmph minding my own business, fortunately no traffic ahead or behind (lucky me) and all of a sudden, this 6ft. tall police constable starts literally jogging the intersection, with his "Latth" held up in the air like the frigging olympic torch....i had to swerve and brake hard to avoid running him over! And what was he doing that for; you ask me; ahem....he was helping some poor kanwariyas cross the road!
People in Delhi....better watch out and keep all 4 of your eyes open (yes I said 4 'cos you need 4 eyes to keep track of these A***holes!!!) or you might end up in one of Delhi's govt. hospitals with what not broken!

I had a patient in an ambulance, heart attack, BP 50mm Hg, coming in from Dehra dun, missed our plane because of bad weather, got 'chakka jammd' by the mob, ran out of oxygen, ran out of battery for the IABP (an assist device to make the heart pump blood better) had a break down, a flat, another mob of the devout -who wanted money to let a dying man in an ambulance pass...and made it to Delhi with the man alive, he went into surgery and walked out 10 days later.befor you label it a tall anglers tale, Mack The Knife can scan the newspaper cutting, or if someday I am immodest enough, I'll point you to the site on google whch featured this story. I guess I was the lucky one!
