Famous people, Interesting Guns

Post by herb » Sat Jun 14, 2008 6:30 pm

While going thru my old gun books came across some photos which some of you will find interesting. The pictures are from a by gone era so my apologies for the poor quality.

Raja Man Singh of Jaipur with his first tiger at the age of 11. Looks like a Mauser action from one of the famous British makers.

Image

Jagat , Son of Raja Man Singh & Gayatri Devi (Daughter of Maharaja of Cooch Behar), with his first also at the age of 11...interesting. Looks like a double rifle or shotgun.

Image

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran. Weatherby 300.

Image

A gift for the Shah, a Remington .270

Image

King Paul of Greece, a pair of H&H.

Image

Hemingway. Mauser.

Image

Prince Bernard of Netherlands, reputed to be an excellent shot

Image

Kirk Douglas, looks like a Win 70 from the bolt.

Raja Mansingh in the 1st picture is carrying a rifle made by Rigby in all probablities I assume, from the look of the design and the location of the front sight. Where as the Tiger shot in the second picture seems to have bloated up indicating late retrieval, maybe a bit too late in hot weather. Just an observation. BTW, the pictures are very impressive though.

1st Pic of Raja Mansigh Jaipur.
The rifle looks like one made by Rigby, probably a 275 Rigby. The distance of the fore sight ramp from the muzzle end and the distinct shape of the ramp is typical characteristics of a Rigby rifle.
