Piston Washer/Seal

Hiya !

Will someone tell me where I can get myself a piston seal/washer ? I have tried Kovi Shop at JP Nagar, B'lore but they wont sell. They have exactly what I need, a GSmith washer for a GI Model 65 springer. I can give them the gun and they will install the washer themselves, but they wont sell a washer. Too bad ............

I have gone through posts where people said they "installed" washers and springs. I wanna ask you : did you guys actually install them yourselves or did you mean that you got them installed by the armoury guys ?

the washers from gsmithco are supposed to be good , you can try ordering it from their website http://www.gsmithco.com/contactus.htm,

regarding installing a washer ,most rifle owners usually fix by themself,
the headache for a newbie is to build a spring compressor.

the washer has to be primed before instaling
the care and lubing of a leather washer is not so easy, the chemicals recommended by experts are not easy to find.

you have to get hold of silicone oil for the washer , moly grease to lubricate the spring and other parts and you need to coat the chamber with a teflon spray,

i know all this because i am presently replacing the washer of my air gun.

Thanks Doc. Kovishop had a change of heart. They sold me one ..... now all that remains for me to get is the silicone oil and ...... and a car jack ....

Mack The Knife had indicated in some thread that Silicone oil is to be avoided whether there is metal to metal contact. Below is an example of this for the readers' reference.

I still dont understand this fully. If silicone oil damages metal, it would hurt even the leather to metal contact, would'nt it ? By scouring the metal surface, that is.

Thats funny Fantomfan. I am workin on prepping up my gun and I saw that you were workin on restoring that Diana Jap remake ... so I keep a tab on your thread to see what lubes and chemicals you use. And now what do I see ? Well, the guy is on my thread for the same info LOL !!! Looks like we're in the same boat .... hummm ...

Anyway here's my 2 cents on your question ...

Moly grease : Available (call up an engg. firm and get the details; you dont wanna go straight to hardware shops as you wont be able to make them understand what you want)

Silicone Oil : Available but difficult to procure. I called up a firm and they told me they would get it but till date they have'nt. Problem is, these firms usually supply other firms and shops in bulk and dont wanna bother with small orders like you and I will make. Another thing to keep in mind is, silicone oil comes in a wide range of viscosities. So if you decide to go for it, mention the appln. and let the engineer suggest a suitable one. It will prob. be the lowest visc. rated as number 50.

Neatsfoot Oil : Not available as far as I know. Have to import this if you want it.

Teflon Spray : No clue, have not bothered with it till now.

My project had to be temporarily shelved due to work. Am getting back to it this weekend. Oh BTW, if you are wondering what I am using to soften the seal, its Olive Oil. Prolly not as good as Neatsfoot and Silicone, but should get the job done from what I've read.
