Hello and a few question

Post by satan » Wed Feb 13, 2008 12:26 am

Hello Folks,

I joined the forum today after reading various posts as a guest for the past few days. I stay in Bangalore and had a National 25 air rifle while I was in school. It has been several years since I gave that away (the barrel had become bent, the piston was coming loose from the stock and the accuracy and power had dropped). Now, I plan to purchase another national air rifle.

I had a few questions before I make a purchase. I looked into the various posts but could not find the answer to these:

1. Should I go for a .22 or a .177? I tried to find out the advantages and disadvantages of each on this forum and elsewhere but could not find a comparison. My understanding is that the .177 is more accurate over a larger distance but the .22 has more energy transferred. What does this translate to in practical terms given that one can always compensate a little more for the drop in the .22 trajectory?

2. What should I look out for while picking up a new piece? How do I find any defects? What should I do to see if the rifle shoots accurately or not or has any defects?

3. What kind of sights should I go for (is there is a possibility of such a choice?)? The gun that I had as a kid had a rear sight that had a little spring loaded plate of four notches that could be turned around to get a v notch, a u notch and a couple of others as well. Are these kinds of sights available in the current models? I had a look at some air rifles at hatrick sports and olympic sports but they did not have these changeable sights.

4. What would be the price for the IHP 35 model?

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanx a ton in advance :-)

Hi!

Welcome to IFG!! (Nice choice of name. Any reasons?)

To answer some of your questions:

[1] You've already answered ur first question. As far as practical terms is concerned, hunting is not legal in India. So you wont have any need for energy transfer.

[2] When you buy a new gun, test fire at a target a few times. Check different guns. That'll answer all your questions, including the accuracy. Look for cracks/fixes in the stock, if thats a concern.

[3] The National models avaialble now have the same rotating rear sight with [ ], [ ], V @ U.

[4] Rs.4600 at the Bangalore Armoury. Check Indianhumepipe.com for actuals.

Hope it helped!

Mo.

Hey there,
I picked up the 35 Model .22 in Cochin for Rs. 3300.00 so you will be paying much more over here in Bangalore.

Welcome aboard Satan. Just look at a few of them. Test fire them and choose the best among them. IHP 35 will be available at Asian Armoury for around Rs. 4250/-.

Some of them do. Bangalore Armoury has a workshop at the back of his showroom, where the test firing happens. Distance ~<10m.

Satan: The chief spirit of evil and the adversary of God :-)

Picked up my gun today (IHP 35, .22) - had to shell out 4500/- for it and then noticed that the box had an MRP of 3263/-. The guy told me that thats an ex-factory price. Am not sure how true that is. I do have a bill and warranty card for it though.

Plan to go align the sights tomorrow. I'll probably download and print some targets today and then paste them on a 3/4 inch wooden board.

PS: I decided to pick up the .22 against the .177 as I've had a .22 earlier and I guess trying to compensate for distance should be an additional challenge :-).

The pellet could well bounce back and hit you if you use a board. Use a shoe box stuffed with magazines instead.

And old towels or jeans. I was worried when you mentioned the board, but Mack The Knife caught it.
Don't shoot at tyres either...we have made them mistakes so you don't have to.
