Yesterday's trip to Forbes Sagar

After a long lay off of nine weeks I was desperate to get out and fish.

We left at 5 a.m., stopped for brekkie and were at the lake by 8 a.m.. When we left Bangalore it was warm and muggy but it started drizzling around 6:45 and then kept on drizzling until 2 p.m..

Since the sluice gates have been closed at the power station end the water level at Forbes was the highest I have ever seen in twenty five trips. However, the lack of any strong current meant that we could wade a bit into the canal and fish for mahseer. We were wet in anycase, so a little more wasn't going to make much of a difference. We fished for mahseer until 11 a.m. but barring one half-hearted bite there were no other signs to indicate their presence.

Since Pran was eager to catch his first murral we then started spinning for these. Thankfully, the murral were on the feed and Pran eventually hooked his first after a few failed attempts. We managed to catch eleven murral in total but probably missed hooking twice that number.

We went back to fishing for mahseer at 6 p.m. but the fish had either moved off or were simply off the feed. We wound up at 8:30 p.m. or so and drove back to a Bangalore that was partially flooded.

Pran you too can join but we will need to take turns in the coracle as only two anglers are allowed at any one time.

Doing a full weekend, 16th and 17th, is also a possibility but let me know soon as I have to book the cottage then.

Murrels are also known as snake heads because of the distinctive snake like head. the ones in the photos are probably common snake heads.There is a variety called the giant snake head, which can go upto 45 kgs, however around 5 kg fish is a good find nowadays. it has a distinctice round patch on its tail. murrels make good eating.

Yes. You need to be a member of the Wildlife Association of South India
( www.wasiindia.com ) and have to pay for each days fishing. Rs.150.00 per day per member and Rs.300.00 per day per guest.

WASI reminds me of a project done by the Tata Elcetric company in the Walvan Dam at Khandala (near Mumbai) They used to breed hatchlets and then release them in the catchment area of the Walvan Dam. It was managed by the fisheries department.
over 20 yrs they have bred millons of mhaseer..

While staying at the guesthouse touching the dam the cook would take a walk to the water side and depending on what he caught, we got dinner....
