Salam from the land of tigers (and unfortunately-poachers)
I am Zafar from Ballarpur in Maharashtra
Love guns and pulling trigger of guns and cameras
HWs, Dianas , Canon and Fuji are the favs
i live near forest range and though my home is in densely populated area the king of jungle lives just a mile from here.
poaching is rampant especially leopards (called Bibtya) and tiger. Sambhar (spotless deer) is a regularity. Wild hare and birds are served in hotels.
Recently our area was in news because of a 'man-eater' tigress hunting expedition which was ended by killing a male tiger, the tigress is still on prowl
estimate say there are 43 tigers in our area.
that's regarding the wildlife but gun lovers have a miserable life here .
no shooting range for public, no proper gun shop (4-5 less than decent are 140 miles away) and no rifle club
the sport is dying with old gun lovers and with them a treasure house of knowledge and stories

Welcome aboard Zafar! It's real pity to hear about the rampant poaching in your area... any local group(s) involved in educating people/ conservation?
Cheers!

Welcome aboard Zafar. Its sad to know about rampant poaching at Ballarpur. It makes me nostalgic my father spent quite a bit of his service there. We lived in Chandarpur and remember the night safari, droves of sambhar, bison, a leapord, etc. I remember my father telling how the night shift from Ballarpur had to leave together on bicycles with torches etc to keep tigers at bay. I can go on, do post often.

A grand thank you for the grand welcome
i feel the warmth emitting from these posts
And for Eljefe , yes i sure know him well enough , he was family doctor of ours till my dads generation. His grandson Dipankar Saha was my classmate and Dr Saha's son taught us chemistry. There are other bengaulis here like Mr. Jana , Mr Baidya, Mr Gautam Das, Mr Banerjee who is a union leader, Mr Basak Who now works in a Bangladesh paper mill , Mr Bose and many other .
In the mill 90% of bengauli are from West bengal.Outside it many were refugee from the 71 war.
But how do you know Dr. Saha?
I must add Dr. Saha is as hale and hearty as ever , he drives his own jeep and still practice in his old dispensary at the railway chowk.
Do reveal your connection with my city
Nice to meet you all and specially Mr Eljefe

Welcome aborad Zafar, I would like to ask you, you should post some pictures of your shooting with the camera. Maybe of some wildlife that you've shot (with camera).
I am saddened to read that poaching is rampant and people know about it. What does one do to report such poaching to the authorities and how to make the authorities act upon it. Maybe a sting operation by likes of Tahelka. Maybe Zafar can act as our contact and help Tahelka land the big ones. Betcha they can nail a few babus too.

Why dont you contact some channels like ndtv or times now . They will help you to bring national attention towards the poaching in your area. also why dont you get togother with like minded people of your area and build a shootong range .
