I`ve also seen metal game carriers - which are nothing like as nice - and pictures ( in old books ) of pannier baskets, slung either side of a horse, with a game carrier as a lid.......although whether the `lid` was wooden or wicker I have no idea.
You can get game carriers with four slots - sometimes with a couple of wider slots/larger holes to acomodate Rabits and Hares.
The one shown was probably intended to accomodate Pheasant, Partridge, Grouse, Wood Pigeons, etc as waterfowl equipment tends not to last because of getting wet. It appears to be made of mahogany which would suggest that it was made in England - Indian made items tend to be made of Teak and rather more `exotic` hardwoods. Is there a trade label affixed ?

I've used something like this before for pheasant and squirrels:

but you put the feet in the ring instead. Nowadays for squirrels I put them in a bag instead, or if I don't have a plastic shopping bag with me another way is to cut behind one achilles tendon on a hind foot, thread the leg through belt loop, then push the other foot through the hole you just cut and it will hang there from its hind legs.
