Don't thank me, Django as I wasn't making a polite correction. I don't know much about cars leave alone 4x4s. It's just that I found the figure quite incredible.
I did not know that manufacturers expressed the max approach angle in terms of percentage. Assuming 90 degrees is 100%, shouldn't 60% equate to 54 degrees or is there something more to it?
Thanks.

Re: Tempo Gurkha 4x4
since i had never done offroading in one,i cannot comment, but the price seems high for this product,....
ya that engine used in their range like earlier trax, traveller, and now this gurkha uses a benz 'designed' engine OM616(made in india),and differential, which are the only good part, the price quoted for this vehicle with that kinda basic quality for the remaining vehicle is not worth,
since i had owned ,travelled and done quite a bit of offroading with a gypsy king,i can say what could be possible to achieve with it may be other indian 4*4s purely lacks,..accept the milage it gives with petrol.,for the price def worth 4*4.

LA,
Firstly you need to understand that the Gurkha is a pure play utility vehicle - so there is going to be some serious compromise as far as creature comforts go... ditto for the Gypsy.
As an off road vehicle the Gurkha is a pretty competent performer. It's lockable differentials can make a huge difference between having to walk back to look for a tractor to pull you out of trouble VS driving out on your own steam! Also as biking has mentioned, it uses an old Merc engine design, which in itself is quite nice... though a little more torque and power would have made it perform that much sweeter, especially off road on power sapping surfaces like sand...
If you are really looking at taking this vehicle off road, then how come the choice of a hard top? Would that not restrict your activities somewhat? If you are looking at a city vehicle with occasional off road trips, then you may want to look at something a bit more comfortable - especially if you are going to share it with your wife... Bringing a Gurkha back home and expecting her to drive it around town could result in some serious marital discord!
The Scorpio would seem to fit in your budget, but only the 2 wheel drive models... (their 4x4 model is over INR 10 lacs on road Delhi).
Cheers!
Abhijeet

biking3819,
You truly have no idea what you are talking about, believe it or not, Gurkha is as composed on road as its off road, its ride is among the best. As for creature comfort, apart from standard a/c, you don't need carpeting as this vehicle is made to ford in deep water. The OM616 is made from German 617 internals, thats why the high price. Show me one vehicle with 45% gradient rate, independent front, diff locks front and rear, 238mm of ground clearance, 3.75t rear diff, 1.8t front diff. Strongest suspension with super flexible tubular chassis, super strong corrugated panel body and I will concede its superiority. As for power of the OM616 turbo, it makes it up by revving freely all the way up to 5200rpm, the gear ratio are perfect and the low will pull you out of anything and if that fails, there is always front and rear diff locks.
Try doing this with a Gypsy or for that matter any other off roader, only G Wagen, Toyota FJ can do this.
Also check out Arkaprava Datta's moderator of India's premier Jeep Thrills group opinion on the Gurkha, he drove it extensively on and off road. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/jee ... ssage/6952

hi django thanx for all the info about the gurkha and i do Believe you .
A few of my opinions that i wud still BELIEVE-
the Gurkha being a new age machine cud have been a lil sportier in its design.
the gurkha for sure can do with a lot more torque than it has now of 200nm although it comes early,...but these days a small car with a small engine of 1248cc diesel in the swift can churn out 190nm!,i am sure a change in the gurkha engine wud take it real far,the 616 needs a change now alhough its a tough one in what it is,so much into the engineering of chassis geometry ,mechanicals, dimension, and what goes in is again a 616,now c'mon.
Although with the new engineering incorporated in the gurkha makes it a great offroader which wud have very few takers in India since that sport and adventure oriented fun is very nascent here, and that clears the point why its been exported and one need to order one in its homecountry, think about the logistical problems one wud incur if the vehicle meets with a mishap or fails in some place so remote where only a vehicle like gurkha wud go and finally no spares around ,even in the closest town ,tempo dealers wont be tsocking gurkha 4*4 spares for a long time for sure, Smile
it neither appeals as a utility vehicle nor a brand appeal,it comes in a SEGMENT which just dont exist for now with the masses here, relieving it of its practicality in India other than the defence which suits its purpose.
one more thing i would like to point is offroading just does not depend on the vehicle u use for the purpose but a hell lot on yourself and your skill in offroading,u may be very surprised to know about people and their offroading skills in gypsy's
And God !,How could they not be a lil more creative and consider better than that name "GURKHA",for me it kills the image of such a fine Indian(parly) machine.
regards sanjiv
thanx again for the youtube links, fantastic.

New car engines don't last 500,000 miles, OM616 does. The 91bhp rating works out fine. As for styling, the $60000 G Wagen remains the same and Gurkha will, for style you can always get the pretty Scorpio, Safari and other mall cruisers. Gurkha was made for export, all parts are MB parts and breakdown unless there is an accident and parts are available unels its the engine, in that case it takes two weeks. Anyways, its not for India, and I would never buy it if it had the soft plastic look and make of current pretenders.
Gurkha is an off road tool for the true aficionado, not for everyone and not up to everyone's taste. Same goes for G Wagen and FJ.

the soft plastic look gypsy was pretending well and wud continue doing that in most of the raid de himalayas for more than a decade
as for the G ,its there for the last 27 years and the gurkha took shape in these last 2 years to be sold ,thus one can only wait and watch how long wud it exist with the same design, its premature to comment for now.,one interesting bit of information cud be which are the countries where gurkha is getting exported and deployed, the Gwagon is very apt for purposes in that segment a lot of countries have accepted it over anything ,mostly non civilian use .
But i truly envy one thing in the Gurkha , its the vehicles hardcore offroading ability since both the axles consists hydraulically actuated differential locks, one word AWESOME.
Django whats the total curb weight of the vehicle please let me know.thanx
cheers sanjiv

Raid de Himalayas is sponsored by Maruti heavily along with team support, trust me, any other vehicle including a properly setup MM550 would blow Gypsy away, read German 4x4 89 test on the Gurkha, Gurkha is from 1986, its Dr. Bacher, MB director's brainchild, its not 2 years old as you suggest. The Gypsy was never built for serious off roading, it was built as a vehicle for going to the beach or picnics etc. and it does its job quite well. In Germany, Gurkha is used by enthusiasts who are hard core off roaders, these same persons would also be using Land Cruiser FJ and Gelande Wagen. It is also being used by government agencies, I saw it in Switzerland being used as ambulance. Its a true off roader and diff locks are not just the only attribute of the Gurkha, its the entire package.
