First time at range

Hi Everyone. I wish to take up shooting sports as a hobby. But i have no information on where to start with. I have never been to a shooting range but i have always been fascinated by guns since i was a kid. I thought of shooting as a sport of Rich and Priviledged (May be it is actually), i visited this website just by searching Google and joined the forum same day. I shall be really thankful if you could help me realise my ambition. I am from Jalandhar in Punjab but presently staying and working in New Delhi. Any replies will be appreciated.

what type of shooting would you be interested in? practically speaking, it would be worth catching up the delhi based members on one of their get togethers to get started.

Welcome to IFG.Go through the posts here and you will start picking up.Also,please take time,read the forum rules and try to post in the relevant sections.There is an introduction board and you can start off there.

Hi Amanpreet,

The best way to start would be to begin with airguns (rifle/pistol). This is a lower cost option, plus it also saves you the upfront hassles of getting an arms license etc. Try out the air-gun ranges at the Shri Fort Sports Complex, or the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range at Tuglaqabad. You can rent out imported airguns at both places. The former might be a bit easier as there is no membership required and you can just go there, rent the equipment and shoot.

However, before you even pick up an airgun, I would STRONGLY recommend you study & memorise the rules for gun safety. As you can well imagine, in this sport a careless mistake can be truly disastrous!

Once you have the basics in place (gun safety, aiming, stance, etc.), you can begin to explore the other types of shooting sports... maybe sign up with the local Rifle Association/ Shooting Club, begin to participate in State level matches etc.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Though i m interested in Trap shooting and shotguns but i thing it wont be realistic to start with taht, so would take up Air gun shooting at first.

I completely agree with your advice sir. I want to know if the Air guns used in Sports are different from those available in Arms stores in India. Do you about the procedure at Sri fort sports complex as live at a walking distance from the complex. Last but not the least, can you suggest any informatory articles over internet from rookies like me?

To use the Siri Fort range just walk into the Range... On the left hand side right after you enter the Complex gate..Its right next to the Basketball courts. ask the guy for the rifle/pistol that you want to use.. Tell him you are not a member.. No issues with that. You just have to pay 10 rs extra for the rifle.

Cost (based on my memory):

1) Hiring Imported Air Rifle : rs 40 (since you are not a member)
2) Pellets : 1 rup each
3) Hiring Imported Air Pistol: Rs. 30

(Cost is indicative .. +- 5/10 rs for hiring)

The range incharges there are usually helpful and give u the basic tips so dont hesitate to tell them you are new to this sport...

Also, they jst have one Air Rifle (atleast when i used to visit the range).. so avoid peak hours like Saturday evenings.. you could push your luck since you stay closeby..

Most important thing: Make up your mind before u start.. It is HIGHLY addictive.
